agreed to run for the pres idency of West Germany a decision that means his re tirement from active politics Thesurprising decision was announced by Eugen Gersten maier president of the Bunde stag or lower house of Parlia ment at a news conference Adenauer 83 was known to be fully prepared to cam paign for a fourth term as chancellor at thenext federal election in 1961 He has not been in the best of health recently however and may have decided to bow out of active politics because of his age Gerstenmaier said the ruling Christian Democrats who nominated Adenauer have yet to discuss their choice as Ade nauers successor as chancel lor The post of presidentin West Germany is largely a ceremonial one Adenauers most likely suc cessor as chancellor would be Ludwig Erhard his economics minister E r h a r d emerged with greatly enlarged stature when he refused Adenauers request to accept the presi dential nomination recently The Christian Democrats have been having a great deal of difficulty in choosing their candidate Theodor Heuss who completes his sec ond fiveyear term next July Under German law a presi dent may serve only two terms Adenauer was proposed by a special commission of rank ing Christian Democrats set up to select a candidate for president Heinrich Krone Adenauers floor leader in Parliament told the special nominating commission he felt certain
