fighting was along the Mississippi and Mis souri in Illinois and Missouri THE MOST immediate criti cal area appeared to be along the 50mile stretch of the Missis sippi from Niota 111 across from Fort Madison Iowa to Quincy 111 There was no letup in the patrol along the big river farther south to Cairo 111 Flood danger increased as wa ter spilled over levees at sev eral places and battered hard against weakened dikes at many others along the two rivers College and high school stu dents joined farmers and civil defense workers in the fight to hold the levees in Niota They piled thousands of sandbags atop the Levee south of the small community ACROSS THE river in Mis souri the Mississippi threatened to break through the levee at Gregory Landing Calls were issued for more volunteers to shore up the weakening wall Thousands of acres of rich farm land have been flooded and hundreds of families evacuated from their homes in Illinois and Missouri in the last week Water spilled over a levee at Clarksville Mo Tuesday in undating 5000 acres of farm land A small breach ina levee east of Palmyra Mo flooded 800 acres The Missouri was expected to crest at 225feet at St Joseph Primary of alleged narcotics traffic in Iowa The committee adjourned without even bothering to take any action on the request and a majority of the committee members seemed to feel that it was not Stations LAKE of the top automobile drivers in thenation had Iowa ham and eggs here Wednesday morning as they entered the home stretch of the famed 2065mile Economy Run from Los An geles Calif to Minneapolis After four days of driving the 33 men and 23 women were visibly tired Many com mented that the Tuesday leg of the trip from Wichita Kan to Des Moines was the most difficult because of the heavy truck traffic and detours made necessary by the floods in Iowa and Missouri There was however a fes tive atmosphere at the Salem Lutheran Church here where breakfast was served as the drivers and codrivers real ized the end was fewer than 140 miles away As each car pulled into Lake Mills a trip slip for the leg from Des the drivers stayed Tuesday night handed each driver The slip told the driver his ex act travel time between the two communities Each car entered in the run has had three passengers from Los Angeles There are the driver and codriver together with an observer who keeps a careful check to see that the driver stays within specifica tions set up by the Mobilgas Co and the US Auto Club There are four divisions of cars entered in the c o m p a c t six cylinder Minnesota Fair and cooler Although entrants designate the makes and models they want to represent them the rules set up by the USAC say that the cars had to be picked from showroom floors ware house stocks and assembly lines From the moment of its selection until the run ends a car never leaves USAC jur isdiction When officials are satisfied that the car was completely stock in every de tail they place some 50 seals on it so that unauthorized changes cannot be made along the route During the run the USAC officials in the cars also are responsible to report any vi olation of traffic laws Every violation means a gas con
