challenging By EMILY GENAUER NEW YORK HTNS There was a moment the other morn ing when without straining at all I could have imagined my self in midsummer in a city in the French maybe or Toulouse The setting and the props were all there Guidebook in hand I found myself in front of a wonderfully satisfying church studying its proportions and de tail I had just been to see some stained glass windows in another building Id already taken in one fine exhibition that morning and was scheduled to see some others before driving on to the nexttown ONLY THE GUIDE book was not Michelin It was the WPA prepared Iowa A Guide ToThe Hawkeye State The city wasnt Aix but Cedar Rapids The church was no soar ing Gothic structure but the dar ing circular St Pauls Method ist constructed by Louis Sulii van master of Frank Lloyd Wright back in 1913 and very similar to the circular audi torium at Wrights Guggenheim Museum The stained glass win dows were by Grant Wood in the Cedar Rapids City Hall The exhibition in the two ar galleries of Coe College was o such caliber as to make for a major event in New York in eluding paintings by artists lik Tamayo Matta Leger Lanskoy Stuart Davis Ben Shahn Han Hofmann Arthur Dove Marin Kuniyoshi Hopper Menkes To bey Weber The sculpture wa by Jaques Lipchitz David Smith Beg Butler Kenneth Armitage Jose de Rivera The next town I was headin for was Ames and after Ames Des Moines And in each I exhibitions no less distinguished PLUS PRIVATE collections o such quality as to make the eye of a jaded New Yorker pop trllmagine walking casually int a pleasant but unpretentiou house in a city like Cedar Rap ids owned by some one whos name has not been publicizec among the countrys big styl ish collectors and finding smallish livingroom hung wit exceptionally handsome can vases by Picasso Gris Matisse K a n d i n sk y Munch Villon Braque More important than the ex hibitions the buildings the mur als even the collections was the excitement about art in those Midwestern cities And just as important as the eagerness was the knowledge There couldnt be any doubts from the questions students threw at me that not only were they familiar with the last word in modern art but that they had no predisposition to accept any thing simply because it WAS the last word Ill never forget the pretty girl in the first row who raised her hand and asked But WHY is abstract art the art of our limes Or the boy who asked But dont you consider emotional states to be as much a part of reality as the things you can see I SHOULDNT have been sur prised really at all thats been going on in the Midwest especi ally in Iowa and Illinois For years Ive been receiving cata logues of college exhibitions out there known the caliber of their presentations and of their art staffs Especially Ive been aware of a healthy skepticism in these areas a resistance to any brainwashing by New York deal ers and museums I couldnt tell how many of the students I talkedtointend to become farmers even among those at Iowa State Most of them come from farm communi ties and will function in a farm sconomy I dont even know not being an economist that the area is really as prosperous as it seems Perhaps it IS burdened with economic uncertainty But one thing Im certain as a result of my trip Theres an as tonishing amount of culture along with agriculture in
