Madison Wisconsin State Journal (Newspaper) - March 12, 1920, Madison, WisconsinWEA TH ER COLDER IheWiscor 6 f i e r n h . Tm k l J WIite Journal CITYEDITION VOL. 134, NO. 162. 81st Year. MADISON, WIS., FRIDAY AFTERNOON, M ARCH 12, 1920. TW ENTY PAGES PRICE TW O CENTS LODGE OFFERS NEW COMPROMISE N A T IO N 'S COAL BILL TO JUMP $300,000,0001 W ASHINGTON-Approximately $300,000,000 will be added yearly to the cost of the national coal bill, according to coal operators who claim to know the contents of the major ity report of the national com mission forwarded to President Wilson yesterday. This in crease would be paid by the pub lic in higher coal prices or in creased charges of utility com panies and other large consum ers of bituminous coal. According to the operators the coal commission recommend ed an increase of l l per cent in the wages of miners over the 14 percent increase recommend ed by Former Fuel Administra tor Garfield at the close of the nation-wide fuel strike in De cember. This would necessitate adding from fifty to sixty cents per ton to the price of bitumin ous coal at the mines, operators say. The report of the majority of the commission is expected to be made public today at the white house. John P. White, labor member of the commission, is planning to forward a minority report to the white house recom mending a wage increase of ap proximately 18 per cent over the 14 recommended by Garfield. This disagreement of the com missioners may plunge the en tire coal controversy back into the chaos it was when the com mission was appointed, it was feared. Hearings on a motion for in junction on Hines' control of distribution were proposed in the district supreme court today to give government attorneys a chance to prepare their defense. There was much speculation here today as to the probability of the bituminous miners join ing with the anthracite miners who are threatening strike April I unless their demands for in creased wages are met.
