Fjelstul funeral Home 319-382-5210 theatrics theme of the night at schools headquarter by Phil Brinkman education reporter the Madison theatre Guild had just finished rehearsing in the auditorium of the Madison school District s Headquarters monday night but the theatrics did no to Stop there. First about 350 angry teachers carrying picket signs paraded through the auditorium protesting the Lack of a new contract. They were hoping to make an impression on the school Board which holds its bimonthly televised meetings in the auditorium. Only one problem the Board Wasny to in. It was still in a committee meeting upstairs. So the teachers climbed on stage and deposited their picket signs in front of Board members desks. When the Board finally did Convene and Clear away the sign their first order of business was to recognize East High school principal Milt Mcpike for being named Wisconsin a principal of the year. Affecting the pose of a celebrity talk show Host superintendent Cheryl Wilhoyte approached a decidedly hesitant Mcpike microphone in hand inviting him to join her on stage for the districts version of a this is your for the next 20 minutes in a take off on the popular television program the 6-foot, 5-Inch. Mcpike twisted and turned in his chair As Wilhoyte introduced voices from his past asking with each a do you recognize this voice a when Mcpike would finally recognize the speaker a a childhood Friend a former colleague his own son a the person would come on stage while school Board president Juan Jose Lopez held up an a a applause sign. Touched often to the Point of tears Mcpike thanked his family teachers and students who he said really deserve the Honor. A you done to go into this Job to be recognized you go into this Job to do the Best thing for people Quot he continued from Page 1b strict spokesman Mike Mccabe said final enrolments should slightly exceed the 25,179 projected. Elsewhere the first Day of school in Madison appeared to go smoothly despite a threat by the teachers Union to cease All work outside the classroom until a new contract is signed. Superintendent Cheryl Wilhoyte dispatched Central office staff to All schools to fill in for teachers who normally Volunteer to supervise children before school and at lunchtime. In most cases the help was sent Back because teachers were still doing it Mccabe said. Instead teachers saved their ire for the school Board staging a noisy rally outside the District Headquarters at 545 w. Dayton St. On monday night and promising More Job actions later in the week. There were other signs of disaffection at mondays school Board meeting where members Ray Allen and Mary Jan Rosenak tried to Block final approval of the principal appointment at Wright. Superintendent Cheryl Wilhoyte had picked Willan who retired As principal at Kennedy elementary last year As Wrights a on site principal. She then named Lincoln elementary principal Carolyn Stanford Taylor. Well known to South Side parents. As a a Lead principal although she plans to spend most of her time at Lincoln. But Allen and Rosenak said it made no sense to ask Stanford Taylor to Divide her attention Between two schools. And instead of pulling Willan in from retirement the District could have tapped one of several former principals already working in other administrative jobs Allen said. They were Defeated 5-2. For their part teachers at Wright just seemed delighted to be moving into their bigger fancier digs. Since Wright opened in 1983, the Magnet school has operated out of the cramped Hoyt school 3802 Regent St. A i think initially its just going to be real exciting a seventh Grade teacher Debra Stanko said. A a it a a very positive environment. Its a Beautiful fellow teacher Joe Wuellner was All smiles As he surveyed the groups of children waiting outside the school. He said its been a quiet summer and he a anxious to get Back to work. A the building is Nice and ifs new and a he stressed a a it a really clean. But its the kids that bring life to it.
