skills project at the us Day care Center two lop photos by David Sandell want some help the Union has it by Sobanko of the capital times staff University of Wisconsin students on the Madison Campus at least 1000 of them do More than go to school they serve As volunteers in a multifaceted program serviced by the memorial Union which offers just about every Type of helping possibility imaginable both on Campus and off a Small number about 10 per cent Volunteer because they Are required or encouraged to do some Volunteer work As a part of a course requirement Paula Perrone student chairperson of the memorial Union outreach and services program and Joan Schuette advisor on Community Volunteer services Are particularly enthusiastic about the student Foster Parent program aimed to help 16 and 17yearolds student Foster parents must be at should Plano being a Parent up to a year and can be married or single the teens needing care May be runaways or from detention Homes each Foster Parent must obtain a Foster Home License from the Dane county social services department which administers the program but As it says in a pamphlet handed to prospective parents a warm Home atmosphere and a liking for children Are much More important than the furnishings the teenagers dont need a Mother father or sibling relationship in fact they May respond belter to a single Parent relationship As is Perrone says you maybe remember when you were this age and were having trouble with your parents perhaps Over dating Well these kids have even More serious emotional problems and it has been found that a full time big brother or big sister relationship May work better than the traditional Foster Home Environ ment a Foster Parent receives a Standard rate of a month for the Childs room and Board medical expenses Are also covered though response has been Light much of it is due to the age requirement and Lack of publicity As is Schuette says they the need a do Goody Type social worker they need someone to talk to someone who is close to them in age and who has recently been through much of what they Are going through 1 one Foster Parent workshop was held last week and another will be held Jan 23 the outreach program also sponsors the one Toone tutoring program which matches elementary Middle and High school students in ten Madison Public schools with univer sity student tutors the twosome get together once a week for two hours there Are tutors for Reading Reading comprehension mathematics foreign languages and science right now there Are 35 tutors for Middle school students 15 in elementary and 20 for High school students ninety per cent of the tutors go to the school during the Childs free from and work with them others May meet the child after school or go to the Home tutors Are also friends to their charges taking them on Short trips and to parties including a Spring zoo trip or to on Campus Gett Gethers such As the recent one which included a movie lunch and depending on a tour of the Dairy barn or Ping Pong and billiards at Union South they the tutors had hoped for a tour of what but no one under the age of a Junior or senior in High school is allowed to tour that facility even though in this Case they would have been accompanied by tutors there is also a program called Union South tutoring for University students who May need help in a required subject other examples of How student volunteers help the Community includes requests from the Portal Foster Center which works with the severely disabled in conjunction with the Madison area association for retarded children they have asked for a Volunteer in dance therapy a person to work on Toone with a severely handicapped person and another to answer the phone a couple of mornings a week occasionally mrs Schuette says though we dont like working outside established agencies we get a Call we just cant turn Down for instance i had a grandmother Call who is arthritic and ask for a Volunteer to come and play with her 6yearold granddaughter after school dormitories on Campus Are encouraged to hold special parties for head Start children or nursing Home residents a Volunteer interested in correctional work also serves As a qualified lifeguard at Lowell Hall when a group comes from Oregon school for girls to use the Pool on tuesdays occasionally there is a Call by an adult for a Tutor another highly successful undertaking is the Union Day care Center at 206 Bernard it for children of University students faculty and staff 30 children Between the Ages of 2 years 9 months magnificent Snow capped Sierra Range fresh Green and magically picturesque he passes the morning in descent ears popping a misty phantom engulfed in billowing Clouds How High the peaks How deep the valleys How pure the Rushing bubbling streams Alu Miu there is a Beautiful Garden Here an immaculate Square surrounding the Capitol its Well kept paths Are lined with Majestic Trees and shrubs of All descriptions it is much too Lovely for the daily Idle pleasure of the Grade b movie actor and Grade c politician who Peers out upon its splendor from behind the windows of the governors office fitting that he soon shall depart adjacent there is a Plaza a mall a Refuge in the eyes of the traveler for beggars and old age pensioners who congregate in the Twilight of their lives to die Pas sively in the Sun so City by the Bay remains a place of dreams proud tall and erect perched precariously on towering hillsides sloping steeply to the Ocean shores Alcatraz looms foreboding the Golden Gale Bridge glistens Orange in the sunlight buoy Bells Clang in the Harbor fog horns sound deep and throaty from the bows of passing ships the traveler is enchanted he takes his lunch on a pier at Fisherman wharf sharing his fresh crab and loaf of bread with plump and Sassy sea gulls that flock boldly at his feet he dines that night in Oriental opulence at the Empress of China High above the narrow streets of Chinatown and later sips a drink from the panoramic Vantage Point of the top 0 the Mark gazing silently Down from Telegraph Hill upon the twinkling lights of the City in repose tranquil and at peace a Small pity he projects that for the one great fault on which it is founded like All of California it shall someday slip surely to the sea buy your oceanfront property in Nevada Highway 1 for falling rocks 100 Miles of Rocky Shoreline winding roads that twist through hairpin turns and Cliffside from Monterey to big sur the Sun glints on shimmering Waves cresting High bearing
