Lowell Sun (Newspaper) - June 19, 1970, Lowell, Massachusetts 20 THE LOWELL SUN, FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 1970 Tremendous It THE WORD FOR YOUR RE- JFONil TO OUR J% HOMO MILK, THE ORIGINAL LOW-FAT MILK FROM LOWELL ALL JTM! OAIKY. AvollobM Al Your Door Or Your Sarge turns to an old trusted friend By LORING SYYA1M Sun State House Bureau STATE HOUSE Gov. Fran- cis Sargent has now turned to man I can trust the most" In his almost desperate attempt to put together a winning ticket for the upcoming convention, primary and election. Donald R. Dwtght, 39, is the personable, well-groomed Com- missioner of Administration and Finance, which is a job belter identified as deputy governor. He got the position because he has known Sargent for years and worked with him most intimate- ly when both were in the De- partment of Public Works, the governor as commissioner, Dwight as an associate commis- sioner. When Gov. Sargent was pre- paring to take over the helm of the state, on the withdrawal from the corner office of Gov. John Volpe to take a cabinet post in Washington, it was Dwight who helped Sargent think through the formation of his own administration. There was speculation that Dwight would be brought in himself to replace the Volpe commissioner, Anthony DeFako, speculation which incensed De- Falco and led him abruptly to resign in advance of his own deadline. There were many who thought it was Sargent's first effective hatchet job on Volpe personnel and the speculation proved true. Dwight now has been tapped by Sargent to be his running mate, replacing the battle-scar- red Martin Linsky. Linsky has fallen victim to smears and ru- mors stemming from what he terms "an innocent incident'1 last year involving a Negro prostitute he was taking to her home. "I HAVE depended on him in these months of my tenure more than any other Gov. Sar gent said yesterday of Dwight "His talents have been invalu able to me as governor and havi made a remarkable success o his commissionership. "I trust him more than an; man I have ever worked with.1 The relationship between th two men has been obvious o: Beacon Hill. Dwight is includei in virtually every high level de cision involving administratio problems and political strategy i UPI A happy family In a dramaiie press conference ar. >he State Hojse yesterday afternoon, Gov. Francis Sargent dropped Rep. Martin Linsky as his choice for the Republican nomination for Lt. Gov., and named State Admin., !ay he was taking a risk in nam- ng Dwight so soon before the on vent ion when he was not mown to delegates and might ave a fight with the far better mown Sen. John Quinlan. But argent will throw every asset n his possession into the battle o secure Dwight as his running mate. "I badly need an assistant I :an lean said the governor in anticipation of the erm he expects to fill by elec- ion in his own right to the chief executive's office. Dwight said he is reluctant to enter the political arena on two counts: 1) he loved his fairly anonymous role as deputy gov- ernor; 2) he .didn't like replac- ng Linsky. It will be his first venture in wlitics as a candidate, and he ;ave the impression he has some trepidations about it, hough the speed of events has >ushed this into the background. Dwight has been associate niblisher of the Holoyoke Tran- script-Telegram, a family-owned newspaper of some standing. ie was reluctant to take a leave of absence from this post 1{ months ago when Sargent called lim to the State House, but his loyalty overrode his doubts anc he has performed capably as deputy governor. HE LIVES with his charming wife Susan and their five chil dren in South Hadley. An Episco- palian, he was educated at Deer field Academy, the prize prep school of that part of the state and graduated from Princeton in 1953. A Marine, he is also associ ated with various local civi groups and a director of th Mass. Taxpayers Foundation Commissioner Donald R. Dwight to the position.
