The special olympics in los Lunas saturday will have All the fanfare of the International games As a Parade band music presentation of the colors lighting of the olympic flame and the release of hundreds of colourful balloons Herald the opening of Competition especially for retarded children. The third annual special olympics will get underway at 9 . At Foch Romero Field with the Parade of athletes. After presentation of the colors and the National Anthem Torch bearer Tony Garcia will Light the olympic flame. Rev. , Hagen of Albuquerque will give the invocation. Dignitaries to be introduced will include mayor Neel Alexander of Belen Mayo Emilaine Castillo or. Of los Lunas and mayor Coulson of Socorro Joe Mateju a lots administrator and his assistant Roger Adams. Mateju will declare the olympics open and the olympic Flag will be presented and the oath recited. Balloons bearing the names of the contestants will be released by members of the Foster grandparent program at a lots. After special warm up exercises Lead by Olin Young of Peralta 1971 National steer roping Champion the games will begin. Competing will be youngsters from los Lunas Hospital and training school and from special education classes in Belen los Lunas and Socorro Public schools. Mayors of participating cities have declared this week special olympic week and saturday special olympic Day for the tri area meet. Track and Field events for various age groups will include the 50-Yard dash softball throw standing Long jump and the 440-Yard relay. Swimming Competition will be be held on sunday at the los Altos Pool in Albuquerque. Clinics schedule during saturday s games include gymnastics High jump and wrestling. Members of coach Gary Rushing a los Lunas High wrestling team will conduct the wrestling clinic. Closing ceremonies Are scheduled at 12 15. Organizations assisting at saturdays event include Belen los Lunas and Socorro Jaycees Post 9676, veterans of foreign wars the los Altos kiwanis club and the Eastern Valencia county Assn. Of fire fighters. The Etc Aff will be represented by the los Lunas fire dept which will provide a fire truck for the Parade. The los l unas mid elementary band will play. The Albuquerque elks club has provided ribbons which will be awarded. First place winners will be competing in the state meet in Albuquerque. A number of los Lunas Hospital and training school employees will assist at the games along with members of civic organizations. Purpose of the special olympics sponsored by the Joseph Kenned foundation is to give the mentally retarded an Opportunity to compete in sporting events w Here they have a Chance of Success in order to give them self Confidence it is a Way to get them physically fit and to get their bodies under control so work May begin on their minds. Practising for the special olympics High jump is Jacob Baca. The tri area meet will be held in los Lunas saturday and the Public is urged to attend. Swimmers who will compete in the special olympics meet at los Altos Pool sunday get instruction from Juanita Munoz and Katie Torres. Seated at the right Are filberto Lucero Scott Reid Terry John and Heather Lewis. Sweepstake award in the future Farmers of America state Competition was won by the los Lunas chapter. This land judging team composed of Steve Bolak David Oakes March Sanchez and David Young placed first. The Sweepstake award is presented to the chapter with the Best Overall performance individual honors went to David Young who was first High in poultry and Mark Sanchez who was second High in poultry and fourth in land judging. The los Lunas poultry judging team placed first and the Dairy team second. Preliminary plans for interviewing eligible candidates for a proposed nine month Long Institute in bilingual education were announced today by officials in the education department at Highlands University. The proposed Institute is for the 1973-74 academic year and will Lead to a master of arts in elementary bilingual education. Interviews will be restricted to Spanish speaking persons who received their elementary certification during the 1972-73 school year. Under provisions of the proposed Institute those accepted for the program will receive stipends to cover expenses and an Opportunity to study abroad according to the he department of education. He officials will be conducting interviews at eight different locations in the state during the month of april.
