Bilingual proposal approved for Belen Belen school administrators Learned that funding has been approved for bilingual education and the pre school program for the 1973-74 school year but they were also warned not to expect too much from title i Federal funding. State officials said further cutbacks could be expected in title i but that they were keeping in touch with Washington and would let school administrators know As soon As possible. The proposed budget presently totals $4,215,901. It includes $23,000 for the bilingual program which was initiated last year and $17,600 for the preschool program. Both Wugalter and state school supt. Leonard Delayo complimented the Belen Senate memorial 40 committee for its evaluation report. The regular meeting originally scheduled last tuesday was postponed because members were attending the National school Board Assn. Meeting in Anaheim Calif. Appointment of a school superintendent will not be considered next tuesdays meeting since the deadline for applications is not until april 20. Generally the budget includes 5.5 per cent raises throughout the system. Supt. John Aragon explained that in a few cases where the raises Are As much As nine per cent increments and length of employment Are factors. The Board told state officials they wished to raise Aragons salary by $1,000 to $19,000, explaining that he received Only a $200 raise last year. The budget was based on a county valuation of $99,077,866 plus $8,409,106 from Socorro county but with Valencia county a valuation alone now estimated at $108,000, the total May change. The operational fund includes $1,250,000 in Bonds which will be sold next month. Revenue from the state includes $1,598,775 from Basic distributions is 14,649, from Basic programs $282,028 from equalization $40,473 from program enrichment funds $178,290 for transportation and $50,648 from other state Revenue which includes funds for vocational education. Additional funding for special education transportation will be added to the budget. The District valuation based on the District school tax Levy is figured at $55,781,019. At the .00445 tax rate with 96 per cent of collection this plus the $12,000 earnings from investments produce $233,209, from local sources. Wugalter noted the Belen District enrolment projected at 3,400, follows the statewide trend which shows greater increases in grades nine through la. Federal sources included $24,300 for regular vocational programs but the line item for Public Law 874 funding was left Blank.
