part of immense District apropos of the dedication of the new Broadway methodist Church it is interesting to note from the souvenir published by will Ball that the first methodists in Indiana came from Ken Tucky and settled in what is now known As Clark county Peter cart Wright was probably the first preacher he and Benjamin Lakin travelled circuits in Kentucky and occasionally crossed the Ohio to Indiana and preached to the settlers in their cab ins that was in 1804 four years la Ter Cartwright seems to have started missionary work in this state the first regular pastor in the state was Rev Moses Ashworth and the first meeting House was built in 1sos in Clarks Grant the territory was at that time included in the old Western Confer ence Indiana District in that Confer ence was made up of Indiana Illinois and Missouri affording the presiding elder plenty of room for travelling Over his District in 1812 the Western con Ference was divided into two new conferences Ohio and Tennessee in Diana falling into the Tennessee con Ference it was then known As the Wabash District in 1816 another change was made and Indiana was made a part of the Missouri Confer ence together with Illinois and mis Souri in 1s24 this conference was again divided Illinois and Indiana be ing set off and called Illinois Confer ence on october 9 1827 conference met at Madison Indiana and Stephen r Beggs a Young Man of 27 who had been travelling a circuit for 6 years was sent to Crawfordsville circuit previous to this Vincennes had been the most northerly charge in Testate although the itinerant who were stationed there had appointments nearly 100 Miles up the Wabash from that place Rev Beggs had a four weeks circuit embracing Crawfordsville la Fayette Delphi Logansport fort Wayne and Attica he filled out the year of the circuit and in 1s29 was assigned to logans port Mission which included the towns of Delphi and Lafayette the charge was not self sustaining Rev begs had an appropriation of for the years work at the first quarterly conference Rev Beggs was transferred to Bloomington circuit and the work Here was taken up by Rev m Nudenberg who on january 23 1s30 announced his coming in the Pottawatomie times Logan sports Only newspaper stating that on the following saturday even ing january 30 and sunday morning january 31 he would preach in the Seminary then the Only building in Cass is scarcely con enable that Rev Beggs would travel the circuit for 15 months and make no Effort to effect an organization especially As he says concerning this period in his autobiography that he began in truth to be a successful methodist preacher however there is no record of an earlier organization and no one in now living who lived in Logansport at that time that class was composed of six persons judge John Scott and wife Joseph Hall and wife Benjamin Enyart and Joel Martin an exodus to Indiana the Illinois Farmer moving to Central Indiana with the coming of Spring there is the usual exodus of Farmers from Illinois to Indiana and the number this year seems to be larger than heretofore owing probably to the activity of the land agents the movement eastward is caused by the constant increasing of the prices of land in Illinois where the cheapest land is held at per acre some of the movers have made Money farming on rented ground Bat they refuse to pay the prices for land there when they can get Indiana farms with much better improvements at from s5 to 120 an acre another reason for their preference for Hoosier land is the better High ways to be found in Indiana the roads of
