sort out a confusing Domestic situation which lied to a High Speed Chase Early saturday Ive been around 17 years and i Haven seen anything like Sweet said it All started at when Ltd received a 911 Call from Gary Hurst of 1427 Smead St he told a dispatcher that his wife Julie was trying to kill him and that several shots had been fired at the Resi Dence according to a report filed by officer Carl Swan later Julie Hurst having fooled everyone including police that she had been shot would Speed away in swans squad car leading Ltd and Cass county sheriffs department officers on a High Speed Chase being left without a car Swan interviewed Gary Hurst and the hurts nextdoor neighbors Jeff and Helen key of 1431 Smead St Jeff key whom Julie Hurst ear Lier had accused of shooting her told Swan that he had nothing to do with the shooting in fact he told Swan Julie had broken into their House and that the Only reason the keys were involved while interviewing Gary Hurst Swan Learned that on Friday night Gary want feeling Well and went to bed in an upstairs bedroom Leav ing his wife downstairs with the television and a bottle of tequila hed bought for her earlier around 2 Gary Hurst woke up walked into the upstairs Hall Way and found his wife standing there holding a Shotgun according to swans report she told her husband you Are the Devil and in going to kill Gary Hurst then began wrestling with his wife to get the gun away from her the gun went off two times police said Julie Hurst ran downstairs and the next thing Gary Hurst knew he heard Glass break ing going downstairs to investigate he saw that his wife had jumped ouf the living room window and onto the Lawn the report said Gary Hurst told Swan he thought his wife had overdosed although it Hast been determined if Julie Hurst ingested any drugs Hospital officials Drew blood from her and Are waiting for the results which could take two to three weeks Sweet said after jumping through the win Dow Julie Hurst ran to the key residence broke into the House through the Back door went to the Kitchen and fell to the floor Yelling that shed been shot and that her husband was trying to kill police said after Jeff key told his wife to Call for help Julie Rose to her feet ran through the House and Flung herself through the front picture window Landing on the front porch the report said moments later the police arrived finding Julie Hurst blood soaked and accusing Jeff key of shooting her and trying to kill her swans report said As Swan got out of his vehicle Julie Hurst pointing at and refer ring to Jeff key started Yelling Hes trying to kill me Stop him please swans report said officer Mike Morphet who had arrived before Swan took cover behind his patrol car and ordered Jeff key off the porch Swan commentator Mike Platt their bus was escorted in by fire trucks and police cars the whole bit the kids were All in the gym for the Pep rally but when they heard the bus was coming they All went out and ran along Side it needless to say its a pretty big thing when Cass wins a pretty big the biggest thing in the world around Here is for Cass to win a 23year Walton Resi Dent Rose Cook said something like this really picks up the entire town those boys showed that were a Small town but were a Small town with a big while 68 Cass Center Kelly Kitchel and his teammates were being hailed in the afterglow of the Kings third sectional title in school history Many proponents of single class basketball were using Cass As their Model Cass a school with 346 fewer students than Peru and 734 fewer than Logansport entered the sectional with a 713 record Zero conference wins and faint Hopes of capturing the final single class title at the Berry bowl moments like this Are what single class basketball is All said Eddie Lopez a Star Point guard on the 91 King team which beat Logansport in the sectional and during the regu Lar season you can lose to that bigger school 20 straight times but when you get that one like Cass did Friday night its so special Heck i remember when we beat Logan at Cass my Junior year we didst leave the gym we just spent the night on the George Stephen son a member of the 196971 Cass basketball teams spent Friday night huddled Over a car radio i went to the semifinal game on Stephenson said but we had made previous plans for Friday night anyway i ended up letting my dinner get cold i just had to go out to the parking lot and listen to the fourth Quarter on the Platt believes All of Walton will be either listening to saturdays Marion regional game against Bellmont or travel ing to witness it its been 16 Platt said something like this Hap pens so infrequently that it Cap Tures the entire town i dont think any tickets will be turned while the Kings Cinderella run might not make it through another weekend Walton already has something that cant be taken away something that cant be said for single class basketball i think the Community is entitled to put up a sign saying defending Logansport sectional Stephenson said they could just leave it up for Arnold the Lewis Cass Kings were the Clear winners on Friday night in overtime at the Logansport High school Berry bowl members of the team Are jubilant As they hug one another and carry their sectional trophy the members l to r Are Justin Bauch Eric Woodke Colin Jones Jackie Hight and Jesse Mcquiston a Lawman of the land Michael Charlie Burks holds the plaque he received feb 19 during a Black history month Cere moot held at the Headquarters of the marshals service in Arlington a the plaque was presented to Burks in recognition of the important role he played As a Federal mar Shal during the integration of Public schools in new Orleans in 1960 the Norman Rock Well painting in the background is the one that immortalized Ruby Bridges Hall the Young Black girl Burks helped protect 4 retired Federal marshal Charlie Burks has had quite a career by Desaine pharos Tribune lifestyle editor six Earold Ruby Bridges May not have been aware of the danger surrounding her that november morning in 1960 but the armed Federal marshals assigned to escort her to new Orleans William Frantz elementary school certainly were an angry White mob chanted two fours weight we dont want to threw bricks and shouted Nigger go Home As the marshals walked the quiet courageous Little Black girl up the front Steps of the previous Allwhite Grade school shielding her with their bodies Ruby and three other Black children had been chosen by the a act to help Inte grate the new Orleans Public school sys tem and Federal marshals were called in to protect them one of Rubys four defenders was a Deputy marshal out of Hammond a Man by the name of Charlie Burks he was a Man la bleed a Nigger Lover by the hostile crowd a Man who had grown up in Logansport in the 1930s and 1940s who until he was sent to new Orleans had never heard of integration i went to school with Black kids and never thought a thing about Burks 75 recalled sitting at the Kitchen table in the Home he shares with his wife Betty on Chase Road Little did Burks realize How momentous those Days in new Orleans would turn out to be fresh out of Rio control training he was one of a handful of deputies who had taken the course and were sent directly to Louisiana for More than two months Burks and three other marshals were assigned to pick up Ruby at the Florida housing project where she was living with her family they would drive her to the previously Allwhite school where she had been enrolled As a first grader the marshals would then stand guard outside the classroom where she sat alone for More than a year because parents had withdrawn their children in protest the schools teachers also protested her enrolment refusing to teach the innocent youngster a woman from Boston volunteered for the Job then at the end of the Day the marshals would drive Ruby Home see Lawman Page a5 festival wants no festival Board of governors has no plans to catch a train that May be leaving they just want people to know they Are on a different track than the Logansport eel River Railroad Rosalie Arnold chairman of the Board and Annette Jones the vice chairman said Friday that the planned Sale of the Logansport eel River railroads switching engine and fire engine red Pas Senger coaches has apparently Hurt the festivals fundraising efforts even though the festival is close to securing an agree ment to again provide a steam train and air conditioned coaches from the fort Wayne Railroad historical society the general Public appears to have the impression that it is the festival not the Railroad Selling the coaches the Board is very very concerned because of the phone Calls were Arnold said we have nothing to do with it we have no control Over it and it was divided years late last year the Logansport eel River asked the Board to indicate its collective opinion on the proposed future use of the train at a meeting held at the county chamber of Commerce Board members told Logansport eel River attorney John Hillis that they had voted to give their Blessing to plans to sell it now Jones and Arnold contend the Public should be More critical of Logansport eel River and its longtime patriarch Wayne Jackson than the Festi Val Wayne Jackson is the sole person in charge of this Arnold said he stated
