Lincoln Daily Star (Newspaper) - October 1, 1905, Lincoln, Nebraska
4 a a j j sunday morning october i 1905. The Lincoln daily Star. Over the Fence to novel scramble Over the High boards in which the University player won High school Defeated University won game in the Bain with Twenty exclusive scores Lundin a substitute tackle made a rec Ord for climbing the Fence after a i wild bail and calling a Kun touchdown. It took Booths a huskers thirty minutes of hard play to score Twenty Points against the Lincoln High school eleven yesterday afternoon in a heavy mining held where no gain was More than ten Yards save on kicks. Though the High school boys were outclassed by the weight of their opponents they fought stubbornly contesting every foot of the Way and forcing the a varsity to bring every Pound of its heavy linemen into the play. The game began in a downpour of cold rain that stopped just before the close of the first half and let the Sun appear. Before the second half began the air was hot and sultry and this. In addition to the heavy Slippery ground made fast flaying impossible. A crowd of perhaps too persons braved the wet to gather in the grandstand before the game and too More entered the Gates after the rain had ceased. Little rooting vat done and most of this was by the Loyal youngsters from the High school urging their class mates into the game. Some stubborn fighting. It took the varsity twelve minutes to a Core the first touchdown and the first half ended with the score at 6-0. Taylor and Cotton did the a a heaviest for the University and with their vast weight and powerful Backfield to push they ploughed through the school boys frequently for gains netting four to ten Yards. Wilson Weller Beekly and Burns pounded the line for almost continual grins but because of their lighter weight they were unable to make headway a Well through the mire. The struggles of the opposing linesmen were oftentimes rather ludicrous. As they were nearly All the same weight and often there was not a break in the line until the Backfield struck it. Hulth Hildebrand Harrison and proud flt for the school boys distinguished themselves by breaking through the line frequently and Downing the varsity backs to it efort they could reach the scrimmage line. Smith left end especially was noticed As he dived into the pounding mass that started for his end and downed his Titan for a loss to the Cor Husker numerous times. The High school secured the Hall Only two or three times but was unable to Advance and was forced to resort to the punt. The Ball soon became heavy and foggy and neither Side was Able to drive the leather More than Twenty or thirty Yards through the tits on kicks though it usually struck the ground and rolled ten or fifteen Yards More before the receiving Side could reach it. Tho University took the Ball in the second half and with a number of changes in the lineup drove it ahead mainly by line smashes to the goal line three times in succession. A Freak touchdown. , substitute left tackle for the University made the strangest touchdown in the second half that has Ever been seen in this part of the country. For the second time in that half Tho big team had marched through the mud to the High school goal line at the North Side of the Field. Here they duplicated a Fumble of the first half losing the Ball on the play that should have carried them Over. The High school got the leather but on Captain Harrison s signal for the punt out Collins Center threw the Ball High Over Harrison s head and Clear of the High Board Fence into t Street. For a Lew moments there was a wild scramble is every player on the two teams at tempted to scale the Wall while the crowd in the grandstand set up a wild bowl of merriment. Lundin was the bist Man Over and he touched the Ball Bown on the t Street pavement. After a Short consultation with coach Booth the referee decided that it was a full edged touchdown and Hager was Given i trial at the goal for the a varsity. A the score indicates not a goal was kicked. Thin was due mainly to the condition of the ground and the water logged pigskin. Play opened in the first half with Captain Harrison kicking off toward the South goal for the schoolboys. Morse got the Ball on the Twenty five Yard line and returned it 15 Yards before being downed. Then the series of line slashes by Wilson. Weller. Meekly and Cotton began. During this March toward the High school goal Taylor s services As bal Carrier were brought into use but a rely. The longest Advance made was by Weller on a run through left end. Most of the gains were from two to seven Yards in length and were made by straight line plunging. The first Fumble. The first Fumble occurred on the High school goal line when a Schoolboy fell on the Ball and it was punted out Twenty Yards into the Field on the next play. Morse got the Ball and proud flt downed him As he caught it. Then Taylor was culled Back and he together with Tbs others in the Backfield gradually moved the pigskin Down to the line. Wilson diminished the distance eight Yards on a run around left end and Weller was pushed Over the line. The touchdown at the West Side of the Field and Morse failed to kick the diff la to goal. Lincoln then kicked North to the varsity and the heavy plunging and the stubborn resistance was resumed. the University s 50 Yard line Smith caught welter behind toe line for a loss and meekly booted the Ball on the next play to minor on the High school s 25 Yard line. Minor fumbled and Johnson recovered the leather for the co huskers. The half ended As the next play began. Soon after the University men had kicked off in the second half they were penalized five Yards. Borg became too anxious and Tore through the line before the Hall was passed. Soon after the youngsters fumbled and Taylor got the leather on the High schools 35 Yard line. A a he huskers began their stilted March a gain and soon Cotton was shoved Over the line for the second touchdown. He a is Given the trial at goal. Minor kicked off South for the Young is Twenty Yards. The University carried it Back ten Yards and the Onward March was resumed. The Cor Husker forged steadily into the High school territory until they were penalised on Lincoln a 35 Yard line again for being offside. But they picked up the distance and advanced to the goal line when the second Fumble of the game occurred and the boys secured the coveted leather and the Peculiar ludicrous scramble into t Street took place. The schoolboys kicked off and the Ball see sawed Back and Forth in the High schools territory until one of minors kicks was partially blocked and the Cor Husker secured it on the High school s 20 Yard line. Cotton and Taylor were put into constant use and they plugged through the line. Taylor making a gain of ten Yards through the left Side and immediately repeating with another gain of five Yards and touchdown. Cotton failed again at goal. Soon after this a spirited punting contest took place Between Schmidt and minor and time was called As eager made a Short return of minor s punt to Nebraska s 45 Yard line. Cottons hurdling and Taylor terrific line plunging formed the feature of the varsity s advances toward the goal. These two heavyweights never failed to gain and occasionally they crashed through for gains of five and ten Yards. The lineup follows University High school Den slow re. A hard contests for Booth s pets the Nebraska enthusiasts claim nine out of the eleven games some bruising Battles three heavy scrimmages scheduled to take place within fifteen Days the gophers Are doing fair work Michigan men training earnestly Boulder giant concede Cor Husker superiority thle year. Nine victories out of the eleven games Nebraska is expected to play will constitute the com huskers successful season this year. If this number is Wen by Booth s men and the mastodons of Yoni and Williama can be held to a fairly Low score Nebraska supporters should be satisfied if the present prospects at Nebraska Field do not brighten. Call it pessimism or anything you chose but search out the facts an they stand today and Only one conclusion will be reached a that this View is not far to the bad. the end of the season shows better results than those named above Booths regime will have received a fitting end indeed. This probably is Tbs lust season Booth will be seen in charge of the Cor Husker. The conditions a a Mummy Quot has to Deal with now Are us follows lie has a team that will average in weight perhaps a Little More than any previous eleven he has i it assessed. The Backfield is heavy Strong and fairly fast. Ile has first class in Terlula for the ends and quarterback but the Gap at the guard Aud left tackle positions Are not filled. Rooters who have been watching practice the last two weeks think these places Are settled and with Good men hut in matter of fart they Are still open nod the coaches Are on a anxious Nebraska a schedule is not As propitious a it might be and at the latter part of the season the heavy game Are going to Caus trouble. Eight old warriors. Nebraska has eight a in Quot veterans Oti the squad. But of these Only three Cotton right tackle Captain Borg Center and Johnson left end Are linemen. A the others Are working for Backfield positions and some of them Are having Promise of a hard time in winning recognition there against some of the newer men. If eager make a place on the eleven this year it will be at Quarter and Glenn Mason is to have a desperate struggle of he gets his old place at fullback away from meekly the big Chap who has shown already that he knows the game punts Well and is doing some Beautiful work in the secondary defense. One would feel disposed to say this does not look so dark for new so Kymm. Peels. Yet the Baek fled. No matter Low Strong cannot win alone. Tile dupe sheets show that the Michigan mastodons Are developing rapidly at Ann Cartwr. And that coach Yost is not preparing for any Quot surprised such As the gophers have received in every game Nebraska has played them. Tho men trying for the Center dates on the Cor Husker squad doubtless will do Fine work in most of the years games for they Are of fair weight. But Only one or two weigh us much As 200 pounds and they must meet opponents at Ann Arbor who will strip Twenty to thirty pounds heavier and who Are built of muscle not fat. It must be figured also that they probably Are getting just As Good training As the Cor Husker. Men Are lighter. That Gopher game looks Good to most enthusiasts and they Are looking for another of those Quot prise packages month s boys have been handing the northerners the last five years. The reports indicate that Williams men Are not quite As heavy us in former years. This also looks Good and the local rooter already Are beginning to lick their Chopa in anticipation. But right Here is where that schedule gets in its work again. Nebraska plays Colorado Only a week before the Minnesota contest. Everybody smiles at the thought of Nebraska being beaten by the Mountaineer again but even should we win it May be at the Eit of several Bood players and the loss of that Superb condition Booths cohort has always had til the other games at Minnesota. Reports show the westerners anticipate being beaten Here by a score of 50 to 0 this is something like the state of mind always prevailing Here Lief re the Cor Husker go to Minneapolis and it has always resulted in Chagrin for the conceded victors. The thought of being beaten by Nebraska evidently Bas not dampened the ardor or courage of tire Rou derites. They have a coach that is instilling Yost principles into his players. They intend starting into the game by conceding Nebraska a big Victory and then forcing her to make Good and of Booth s men done to they Are to get the it s a Nebraska trick to lie worked against Nebraska and bus going to be a Case of Quot dog eat dog a the close proximity of the Minnesota game to the Haskell tussle brought grief to Nebraska last year. The same result is promised by the Colorado and Minnesota contests this season. The big games. But Booth and his men have not the Colorado game alone to contend with. Just a week before meeting Colorado they clash with Ames College. In fifteen Day the Cor Husker Are to play these three games Ames. Colorado Minnesota. Little i known of the real strength of the Iowa men this year but it is understood they Are As Strong As Ever with almost every player from last year s eleven Hack. Previous experience has shown that Ames causes trouble wherever so goes for she always has a squad that is husky As Well As fast and aggressive. Nebraska never did have a Quot snap Quot when playing her and certainly tills year will prove no exception. Booth Quot will be going an the sports put it. he can win All three of these games in the fifteen Day Iii Whit ii he a to do it. T ravers Golf match. By leased wire Ole Neove i.
