OTTAWA (CP) The federal health department is studying effects on health of most of the edible oils used In margarines, salad dressings and other oil- based products, but final re- sults are not yet available, Dr. Keilh Murray, chief of the nu- trition research division, says. He was commenting on a re- port that tire health protection branch is considering imposing a limit on the amount of ma- rine oils used in .margarine- making. Dr. Murray said the research division has been conducting experiments "for a year or mere" and that the program ha? included tests on digestibil- ity of marine oils as well as vegetable oils such as rapeseed and soybean. The program is part of a series of research projects being carried cut in rhent departments or through research grants, to determine the effects of fatty acids on health, especially on bload ves- sels and heart tissues, he said. Research lias linked heart le- sions wilh the amounts of hy- drogcnatcd oils vised. Ex- periments have shown that fat infiltrates tlie heart muscles of rats when they are fed on a diet high in hydrogenated oils. Dr. R. G. Ackman qf the fish- eries research board in Halifax said in an interview the board has been aware of the tests. However, it was important to keep in mind that only the hy- drated oils from herring, whales and being tested and there was no indication that the normal oils of food fish, which are mainly soluble, would cause heart le- sions. Actually, amounts of marine oils available for margarine and other food industries have decreased since 1968-69, he said. A further decline is pre- dicted for 1972-73. As the amounts become more limited, the problem may solve itself. A newspaper report Indicated that prices of margarine might rise if the marine oils, which are cheaper, were restricted. The upper limit for allowances of marine oils could be as low as five per cent, it said. Dr. Ackman said Canadian production of deodorized fats and oils, from which marga- rines are made, includes about 25.5 million pounds of marine and commerce the vegetable The most common deodorized fats and oils, according to in- dustry, trade statistics, are oils, of which 451 million pounds are obtained from the seven common seeds, including rapeseed, soybean and corn. A food expert with the de- partment of agriculture said limiting the amounts of marine oils used in margarines need not necessarily raise prices. It would depend oh whether man- ufacturers could readily get large amounts of other oils from countries with over- supplies of peanut, sunflower or soybean oils, and on the oils compared to a total of amounts of rapeseed oils avail about 576 million pounds for all oils. able cheaply on the domesUo I market.
