Foreigners targets of new regime SANTIAGO (Reuter) Thousands of foreigners who came to live in Chile while the late socialist president Salvador Allende was in power are a main target of the new military regime's drive to eliminate extremists. While the authorities say they have nothing but the highest regard for "produc- tive" foreign residents and journalists, there is a climate of distrust which has left many tourists fearing the worst every time they en- counter a soldier or policeman. Hundreds of tourists, busi- nessmen and international officials still feared trapped in Santiago hotels, unable to leave the country until the new government permits resumption of airline flights. The Allende government granted political asylum to leftwing activists who had fled from right-wing regimes in Bolivia. Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay If offered scholarships to students and researchers from all over the world who wanted to study the policies uf Allende's popular unity government It also gave special entrance permits to "specialists" of various kinds, who were cleared through Santiago's Pudahuel In- ternational Airport without having to pass normal customs and immigration checks. SPREAD DOCTRINE? The new authorities charge that the "specialists" includ- ed hundreds of left-wing ex- tremists imported to spread Marxist doctrine among Chilean youths and to train local militants in the use of modern weapons. The trainees included (Allende himself, they allege. One of the first acts of the new government was to expel accredited Cuban diplomats. In addition to their diplomats there were Cubans, it is said, among Allende's personal bodyguard, most of whom died with him during the defence of the Moneda presidential palace against air and land bombardment Sept 11 There also were Cubans among the group which briefly defended the Allende's home in the Santiago suburb of Las Condes. the same sources say.
