Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 25, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Wednesday, September 25, 1974 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 9 Girl shares bathroom Candidates at forum Anti-dumping findings on VANCOUVER (CP) -Jean Tharp, a 23-year-oJd mining camp technician, is taking showers in an open washroom shared by up to 19 men in the name of equal rights for women. A British Columbia human rights commission inspector said Monday the situation, a result of a recent order to Lornex Mining Corp., is "a mockery of the order." Before moving into the camp. Miss Tharp commuted a total of 105 miles daily to and from Kamloops to work as a technician at the mine near Ashcroft, about 150 miles north of here. She said she wants accom- modation (or herself and other women, but said the company is trying to discourage her from living at the camp. It put her in a full burikhouse, she said, while theTe are other bunkhouses almost empty and "six or seven are empty." She lives in a trailer-type bunkhouse designed for 20 people, two each in 10 small rooms, but was given a room to herself when she moved in last week Charles Reno. Lornex general manager, said the company is attempting to provide "absolutely equal op- portunities and living con- ditions as the human rights commission instructed us to do." The HRC recently directed the company to provide camp accommodation to women "'on the same terms and con- ditions as male employees." The order followed a com- plaint by Dr. Bonnie Buckwa, a former employee The com- mission ordered Lornex to pay to Dr. Buckwa in travel expenses. The company is appealing the award, although not the equal rights ruling, said Mr. Reno. 86 billion gas pipeline application filed By BRUCE LEVETT WASHINGTON (CP> The El Paso Co. filed a formal application Tuesday with the U.S. Federal Power Commission for approval of a SG-billion "alKJ.S." natural gas pipeline across Alaska. The application calls for a pipeline to carry natural gas from the North Slope of Alaska to the ice-free port of Valdez. where it would be li- quefied and moved by tanker the "lower 48" states. The El Paso application is in competition with one filed earlier by Alaskan Arctic Gas Pipeline Co.. for a S5-billion project to pipe Alaskan and Canadian gas south through Alberta. Filing of the application was detailed in a statement releas- ed simultaneously here, in Houston. Texas, and at the world energy conference in Detroit. Howard Boyd, chairman of El Paso who is attending the Detroit conference, said the "all U.S." project would open up major new natural gas supplies to millions of natural gas consumers in the U.S. Midwest, the East and the West "at the earliest possible time." "It will be one of the largest single energy supply projects in history and will be entirely under U.S. control." he said. He contrasted his com- pany's project with that of Alaskan Arctic Gas which, he Mid. would be a 5.400-mile pipeline "largely under lorojpn control" and one that would cut through "virgin SerrUory in Canada, and a wildlife rciuge in Aiaska. and would result in billions of dollars of tax and profit payments lo Canada by U.S. "Sclcrtion of a Canadian would commit the future gas discoveries in Uie ArrJic region oi Alaska to dependence on a foreign BEACHES THREATENED YORK (APi -Sludge Irorn a tmge offshore sewage ournp has been delected two miles Iroir) some of Long Island's beaches, an En- vironmental Prelection Agency official reported. Maurice Gibault, HRC inspector visited the camp last wt'fk and will report to commis-iyn director Kathleen Ruff. "Thf section she was put in has oni- hathroom facilitv in mine the centre." said Mr. Gibault. 'The showers are open, the urinals are open. She is sup- posed to share this with the men." Miss Tharp said she plans to stay where she is, but "I know it's just a rumor, but I heard they were trying to force me out by moving a guy into my room with me. "They will say that's equality, too." outnumbered audience Canada pulp to be removed EDMONTON Maybe it was the traditional apathy concerning school board elections or maybe it was the fact that the Russia Canada hockey game was on television Monday night. Whatever the reason, neither the candidates nor the public seemed too concerned about an election forum for public and separate school board candidates. Onlv five of the 10 can- didates scheduled to speak showed up. The audience in the 200-seat hall consisted of one reporter and the wives of two of the candidates. BLENDER HANDY A wire pastry blender is in- dispensable in making pie dough. It may also be used for mincing hard-cooked eggs and crushing berries. WASHINGTON (CPJ A senior official ol the United States treasury department said Tuesda-v that anti- dumping findings, in effect against Canadian kraft pulp imports for nearly two years, will be probably as early as next week. The official, who asked not to be identified, made the statement following a Tariff Commission finding that such revocation would not injure the U.S. pulp-producing in- dustry. A spokesman for the com- mission said the way in which the reversal came about was "unprecedented" in the 20 years the tariff commission has had the responsibility of making injury investigations. The complicated case was also unique in that U.S. pulp once com- plained that imports of "northern bleached hardwood kraltpulp' from Canada were grabbing an unfair share of the American sequently rallied to the Cana- dian side this summer and called for revocation of the antidumping determination.
