Godfrey said CBS network radio had agreed to release him as of April 30, 1972. William S. Paley, chairman of the board of CBS, said: "Of all the personalities who have con- tributed to CBS over the years, Arthur Godfrey ranks as one of the most important. He will be missed." Godfrey, 63, began at WFBR in Baltimore and joined the Co- lumbia Broadcasting System in 1934. After making his announce- ment, Godfrey continued to tape shows for Ms program which appears seven days a week. "A seven day a week radio program is just too con- he said. "We have im- portant plans for television spe- cials that will occupy a major amount of my attention. In add- tion, my activities in the study of ecology have been growing, requiring "more and more of my time and energy." Joe Forgione, assistant to board chairman Peter Elliott, said such a licence cannot be granted under present legisla- tion, nor can a permit for a din- ing lounge. The university's board ol governors approved last week the establishment of a tavern and acquisition of a liquor li- enee for the dining area, pend- ing ALjCB approval. Mr. Forgione said a canteen licence, like those given mili- tary establishments, would probably be the kind ot ar- rangement that should be made with universities. "Then the board of governors would assume responsibility for setting their own regulations. But under the law as it now this kind of licence can't be granted the univer- i sity."
