Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 23, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta U.S. Lifts Arms Embargo WASHINGTON (Reuters) The United Stales announced Tuesday it is ending its em- bargo on shipments of heavy arms and military equipment to Greece. The embargo was put into ef- fect shortly alter the Greek mil- itary seized power in April, 1907. The state department said the decision to end the restrictions clears the way for the shipment of about million worth of aircraft, tanks, helicopters, ar- mored personnel carriers an other items to Greece in tli next 18 months to two years. The restrictions imposed i 1967 permitted shipments minor military equipment an ammunition to Greece. The state department sai that removal of1 the embarg would enhance the ability Greek armed forces to out their responsibilities in di fence of the NATO area and I make important contributions t the cohesion and strength NATO's southern flank.
