SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT Each year, there seems to be the usual crop of insects to worry about, and like myself, none of us like to use a lot of pesticides. Have you ever tried "companion" or "protective" planting? That is garden plants that have a natural affinity for one another and so when com- bined, tend to ward off pests and diseases. Some com- binations you might try are: ASPARAGUS with Tomatoes, Parsley or Sweet Basil, or Zinnias, Asters and Nasturtiums to fend off the cucumber beetle. BEANS with Potatoes, Cucumbers, Corn, Summer Savory and Carrots. BEETS with Onions. CABBAGE and any of the brassicas family with Potatoes, Celery, Dill, Camomile, Sage, Beets and Onion. CARROTS with Peas, Leaf Lettuce, Chives, Onion, Leek, Sage and Tomatoes. CELERY with Leek, Tomato, Bush Bean, Cauliflower and Cabbage. CHIVES with Carrots, Cucumbers, Peas, Celery and Lettuce. CORN with Potatoes, Peas, Beans, Cucumber, Squash. CUCUMBERS' with Onions and Garlic, Marigolds, Beans, Corn and Peas. WHITE GERANIUMS to attract the Japanese Beetles. PARSNIP with or near Peas and Beans. PEAS with carrots, Onions and Parsnips. Radishes are bothered very little with insects because they are so pungent but they do oc- casionally get root maggot, especially near corn and cab- bage. They are used as a trap to entice the maggots away from corn and cabbage, etc. TURNIPS with Beans. Chives have long been known to help control aphids in a rose bed. Aphids and other bugs do not like ORANGE Marigolds or Nasturtiums, so these give added protection when planted in a garden. You can also use a bright yellow dish (to which aphids are attracted) and fill it with detergent thus luring them and trapping tnem. TO wara off the triped cucumber or squash beetle, try putting a few radishes m with these plants. There are also "good" bugs as well as Some are very beneficial and desirable in gardens. The ladybug and praying mantis eat a large amount of un- wanted insects. Cabbage maggots have become a real problem in gar- dens. To help deter them, place a heaping tbsp. of wood ashes around each plant stem, mixing some into the soil. Rotation of plants is also help- ful. As stated previously, interplanting might be the answer. Surround any of the brassicas with Tomatoes or Sage. Other plants include Nasturtiums and Rosemary. Using tar paper collars around the stems of Cabbage, Cauliflower, Onions, etc. will help prevent flies from laying their eggs at ground level. Also plant in irregular rows to make it more difficult for the maggots to find the plants. For mealybugs, wash off plants with a forceful spray from the garden hose or use denatured alcohol for house plants, putting some on the end of a cotton-tipped toothpick. Red spider mites will not thrive as well if plants have good air circulation. Also wash off with a good spray of water. Slugs may be dis- couraged by placing a narrow border of sharp sand or cinders around beds or borders. Beer in saucers, sunk to ground level, will also attract many slugs. Have you ever tried hanging fly ribbons to catch white fly indoors or in a greenhouse? Zinnias are a trap plant for Japanese beetle .and helps to discourage cucumber beetle and tomato worm. Parlsey helps to protect roses. Herald- At Home FOUNDRY WORKERS REQUIRED WANTED IMMEDIATELY Foundry workers and labourers. Good starting pay and fringe benefits. Per- manent employment.
