It's a tour de force for direc- tor Roman Polanski a gritty stylish movie that can stand with good Hitchcock and the best films of Humphrey Bogart. It's "Bogie type" enter- tainment but the shoes of the master of the quiet thriller are not just filled by Jack Nicholson. Nicholson has slipped into his own two tone, pointed toe slippers as a J930's gumshoe and never puts a foot wrong in the progres- sion of intrigue that is no superficial playing with nostalgia. A private eye, formerly with the L.A. police department, Chinatown detail, it's just routine when he's hired to prove the marital infidelity of the local water commissioner. Some neat trailing, compromising photographs, case closed. Except that the lid blows off when the commissioner's real wife lays a lawsuit on him, drops it, but can't shake off the slick Nicholson. Murder, a graphic nose slitting, beatings, incest and politics are mixed into a devilish brew that has a totall- ing absorbing rhythm that will keep you on the edge of your seat But these discreetly handled excesses never overwhelm the unfolding story or its players. No praise can be too high for Nicholson who manages to convey the seediness of a profession which underlies the exterior slickness. Faye Dunaway is well cast as the enigmatic widow, a role associated with the divine Mary Astor, and the ham- mmess of director turned actor John Huston is used to great effect. All supporting roles have been cast meticulously, including a Hitchcock type appearance by Roman Polanski, the nasty little character who handles the nasal surgery. Full marks, too, for the art direction, the photography and the controlled music score. An ingenious work with a very unsettling finish. Chinatown will hold and stay with you. the film itself and Jack Nicholson the most ex- citing cine actor of the decade. Great stuff at the Drive In this weekend with the double billing of Little Big Man and A Man Called Horse. In Little Bit Man, much of which was shot in the Calgary area, Arthur Penn gives a sen- sitive glimpse into the hypocrisy of the traditional view of the early west and a fascinating look at the truth through the eyes of a 100 year old man. Great performances from Dustin Hoffman and Chief Dan George, and one memorable scene in par- ticular where the U.S. cavalry POLISH UNIVERSITY YOUTH CLUB IN CALGARY is pleased to present BALLADYNA Tragedy in 5 Acts by Juliusz Slowacki Saturday, Sept. p.m. in YATES MEMORIAL CENTRE TICKETS: Adults, Students HOTEL Next Week LOUNGE Nightly Tom McNicol TAVERN ENTERTAINMENT NIGHTLY SATURDAY SPECIAL CHEESEBURGER PLATTER (Cheeseburger, French Fries, Cole Slaw) Available at Both Locations 210-3rd Ave. South 1607 Mayor Magrath Drive blithely plays "The Girl 1 Left Behind Me" in counterpoint to the slaughter of Indians.
