Miss Day, 50, was awarded a verdict against Jerome Rosenthal in a complex trial involving 13 separate suits. In the non-jury trial, Superior Court Judge Lester Olson ruled Miss Day was en- titled to recover money she had lost through investments. In a 90-minute decision, Olson accused Rosenthal of "the grossest fraud and a breach of his trustee relationship with the actress and her late husband, Martin Melcher, and said the deals in which Rosenthal was involved "stink to the high heaven." He said Rosenthal took advantage of the couple and accepted "kickbacks and rebates in disguise of attorney fees." Rosenthal was not in court, but Miss Day appeared wear- ing a pant suit and floppy hat. She broke into tears and then laughed when the decision was handed down. Free help for art collectors TORONTO (CP) A leading Canadian art con- noisseur has some practical advice for the novice collec- tor. Hugh Pryce-Jones, director of development of the Art Gallery of Ontario, said becoming familiar with art dealers and their wares is of supreme importance. "Spend your weekends talk- ing to various he suggested. "Visit the prin- cipal dealers and establish the kinds of work and artists they handle. Make yourself known to them." "But. he cautioned: "If you are buying primarily for in- vestment, buy only through an established dealer." Mr. Pryce-Jones said he has learned more from dealers than from art textbooks. ''Many dealers are frustrated because customers are afraid to speak to them. A good dealer wants to give good advice and educate you." He recommended dealers listed through the Professional Art Dealers Association and the reading of magazines respected in the art world, such as Arts Canada Magazine and Vie des Arts.
