Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 19, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta new Wtdnetday, September 19, 1973 LETHBRIDGE HERALD UN era UNITED NATIONS (AP) The United Nations admitted East and West Germany as members Tuesday in what the General Assembly president described as a new era for the world body. Entry of the two Germanys was the major order of business on the opening day of the assembly's 28th annual session. With the entry of the two Germanys and the Bahamas. the UN membership increas- ed to 135. There were 51 founding members in 1945. The Germanys were the last of the former Axis powers de- feated in the Second World War to gain UN membership. Italy joined on Dec. 14, 1955, and Japan on Dee. 18, 1956. The German entry was the fruit of tensions among the Big Four victors, the Un'ted States. Soviet Union, Britain and France. BRANDT PRAISED It also was -a crowning achievement for West German Chancellor Willy Brandt, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to promote friendly relations between East and West. Brandt is scheduled to ad- dress the General Assembly Sept. 26. The entry of the Germanys leaves four divided countries still outside the Koreas and the Vietnams. South Korea has proposed separate North and South membership, but the North wants a single membership. The Vietnams are not close to anything beyond observer status. may .f- i. N' "-own.
