Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 19, 1972, Lethbridge, Alberta -Tuwfoy, 19, THE LETHMIDCE HERAID Cattle warble control vital By DR. M. A. KUAN Toxlcologist Lclhhriilgc Research plation In I960, as o result ot the work done at Ihc Research Station, a program to exterminate cattle grubs was injtlaled in the County ot We- taskiwin. Since then the pro- gram, lias expanded to other parts of Alberta. Approximately 60 per cent of the cattle in the province will be treated under this program during the nutunin of 1372 and the spring of 1973. A similar program has been initiated in sou thwcstern Saskatchewan, where about caltle will be treated this year. In Alberta, the program Is financed and administered by the Alberta department of ag- riculture and the counties or other local authorities. We at the research station have provided scientific advice for the expansion and organi- zation of the program in Al- berta and Saskatchewan and have also assessed the effec- tiveness of the program in the County of Welaskiwin. At the sUu-t of the program the average number of grubs in untreated cattle was 9 in tho County of Wctaskiwin anti 16.5 on nearby farms in the Coun- ties of Lcduc, Camroso, and Ponoka. After four annual Irealmcnts, the average number of grubs lias been reduced to 0.17 in the County of Wctasltiwin and to 7.5 on the neighboring farms. So far, no cases of sickness or death due to grub-control treat- ments in the county have been reported. Cattle grubs can be exterm- inated in a region after three annual treatments, .provided (hat adequate steps arc taken to ensure that all the cattle in a given area arc treated. After three years, it will be neces- sary only to treat in the aut- umn untrcalcci cattle imported to the area and to treat in tho spring only those Ccw animals that may show warbles. Surveillance is nn essential part of Uic Alberta grub con- trol program. It is carried out by sampling at least 10 per cent of the caltle on farms in a given county and by examining all the cattle sold at the auction markets. At those examinations, It Is necessary to feel Ihe backs of the cattle with the hands be- cause during Ihc late winter and early spring some of the warbles may he concealed by the long hair coat. No satisfactory and practical substitute is available for the insecticides now being used for controlling caltle grubs. The chemicals used for this purpose are relatively unstable com- pounds and do not constitute any hazard to human or animal health so long as they are used according to Ihe instructions on the label of tltc container.
