Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 18, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETHBRIDOE HERALD Tuesday, September 18, 1973 7 Dire predictions proven wrong Opera is still going strong By LOUIS SNYDER Christian Science Service NEW YORK Dire predic- tions about the immmment demise of opera seem not to have reached Gian Carlo Menotti, who for more than 20 years has been the most produced living operatic com- poser in the world In fact his latest stage work, 'Tamu Tamu which in In- donesian means The Guest, had its world premiere perfor- mance in Chicago Sept 5 Temporarily relaxed after having made a final casting choice, Menotti was ready to talk of various aspects of an international career of 35 years which has included many successes, several dis- appointments and not a few surprises I couldn t believe it when I received a message from the International Congress of Anthropological and Ethnological Sciences, asking me to write an opera for their September meeting in Chicago Menotti said with a flicker of amusement in his voice I thought it was a joke Then its president Dr Sel Tax of the University of Chicago called to invite me to a dinner here in New York to discuss it There were about 20 I was very nervous with all those famous and learned people, like Margaret Mead but they were so nice, and they let me choose what I d like to do, with no rigid specifications I felt like Verdi, being ask ed by Cairo to compose Aida1 It s very interesting this new connection between music and science I don't know if a composer has had this kind of commission before Of course musicians have made important scien- tific discoveries Leopold Mannes the pianist and young Leopold Godowsky invented the Kodachrome color photography process Now I feel I should contribute something to science discover a cure for the common cold perhaps But seriously We met again a smaller meeting this time they liked my ideas, and said go ahead Quite different from those sessions with opera house boards of direc- tors Was the Indonesian setting their suggestion' No Menotti replied 1 had in mind the conflict of two civilizations one that we know well and one that we don t And Indonesia present- ed itself as the unfamiliar one Of course that posed a problem since I ve never been to Indonesia He was reminded that Puc cini did well with Madame Butterfly without having been to Japan That thought encouraged me too he laughed And Tamu-Tamu won t be any more Indonesian than Butterf- ly is Japanese or Don Giovanni is Spanish And it has no racial connotations But I did have great help from a lady at the Indonesian consulate with certain ex pressions and customs, to provide contrasts between the exotic and timeless and a parvenu Western civilization However the setting actually could be anywhere Ab has been his practice since his first fame winning opera of conservatory days Amelia Goes to the Ball the libretto nab been written by the composer himself And as TONIGHT "BARNEY AND THE BEERNUTS" AT THE MINERS' 733 13th St. N.
