Hurst is a Bermuda carriage driver. When Bermuda reluctantly suc- cumbed to the motor age and let automobiles take to its roads in 1M6, Hurst declared he would never abandon his horses. "I don't give tuppence for your motor he tells tour- ists as he takes them for rides in one of his eight carriages. With a wave of his whip and a doffing of his London made hat at a woman passerby, he continues: "My horse can do 20 miles an hour and hasn't been de carbonized in the eight years I've had him. Whv do I need a Horses and carnages are in demand by brides; riding to church in a carriage decorated with white blossoms remains a popular custom. For a wedding, the men explain, they may use a vis-a-vis (a large carriage with a a surrey (with the fringe on a buggy (with no top at all) or the splen- did, varnished opera bus. The variety of Bermuda's car- riages seems endless and some fascinating examples are on display in a collection at St. George's Carriage Museum. In- side the pastel pink museum visitors can ponder the history of a shiny yellow and black tally-ho that towers 12 feet and needs four horses to pull it; a small, tub like Victoria with polished brass lamps; or a sol- emn black hearse, which put in 30 years of service at Bermuda funerals before it was shipped to Philadelphia for an appear- ance in an opera. Driving a carriage now poses a number of problems. Bermu- da no longer has a full time blacksmith or a spare parts shop for carriages; nonethe- less, two dozen drivers remain faithful to their trade. There has even been a recent in- crease in the number of car- riages on the roads. New Ski Centre By winter of 1972, a 13-mil- lion-mark project is to be com- pleted at G-annisch-Partenkir- chen, Germany's foremost win- ter sports centre. The project comprises the development of a skiing centre between Mt. Alpspitze and the Knetizeck to be served by seven aerial ca- bleways and ski lifts. Con- struction of a cableway to the Osterfelderkopf is to begin shortly. Together with the Kreuzeck cableway, it will be able to convey 800 persons per hour to the new skiing area. Wide Choice, October To March Irish Tours For Canadians Ireland, a Canadian traveller has said, is to be somewhat like the country's fa- mous Guinness stout i.e. "in long draughts and savoured, slowly." And this is especially feas- ible between October and March, when the pace slows down, though there is no lack of activities such as hunting, golfing and theatre. Moreover, the climate is al- ways mild, the roads merciful-1 ly free of traffic and, even if you decide not to buy a castle, you can luxuriate in the turret suite at less than half the sum- mer rate. To make it easier to plan your trip, Irish International A i r- lines is promoting a series of five tours of Ireland specially tailored for the Canadian visit- or, between October through March. They range from seven to fif- teen days and offer a wide choice of itineraries. Freewheelers can go it alone with a car, unlimited mileage and accommodations for seven (or fourteen) nights in Ireland, or mix one week in Ireland with a week in London where they have entree to leading disco- theque and cabaret shows. There's also a seven day tour which features the famous Me- dieval Banquet at Bunratty Cas- tle with a week in Dublin, or for travellers in style there's an escorted fifteen day de luxe coach trip of the island's lead- ing resorts with., special sight- seeing tours in Dublin and vis- its to Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, Wexford, Galway and Connemara. Prices for a iwo- week holiday are as low as (Ca- nadian) excluding air fare from Montreal. 'Westward Ho' Voyage Takes You Round World The P and 0 liner Arcadia fare. One takes in Morocco, will sail westward from Van- couver next February 7 on a three month round-the-world voyage entitled "Westward Ho." The famous cruise liner will make 21 ports of call as she circumnavigates the globe, heading first to the sunshine and mid summer of Honolulu, Suva, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Then Arca- dia goes in search of romance to Teneriffe in the Canary Is- lands, to Casablanca, Lis b p n and London. But the vacation doesn't end there, for Bermuda, Nassau, Montego Bay, Panama and Acapulco are still on the itinerary before the run up the West Coast and home. P and 0 arranges shore ex- cursions at each port of call and a choice of two land tours is included hi the sea vacation Spain and Portugal, while the other concentrates on England, France, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Optional tours at additional cost are available to Dubbo in rural Australia and to a game reserve in Africa. Following the round the- world voyage, Arcadia will re- turn to the Canadian west coast for another summer of cruising to Alaska. Korean Population The population of South Ko- rea, since he war, has swollen to more than 29 million, crowd- ed into an area slightly small- er than Virgina. Although North Korea is larger, only 12.4 million live there. Brighter Bigger Britain's 4New "TO a select group of there. We won't ninontonyou when it's forty betow. It doesn't make sense to put anti-freeze into your radiator if a tiny unnoticed leak in your cooling system lets it all run out. That may not be too serious back East, where real winters just don't happen. But it can be disastrous out here, so we've devel- oped a new "Prestone" Anti-Freeze formula that will protect your car under the severest conditions. And it won't run out on you at sub-zero temperatures. First, "Prestone" Anti-Freeze can actually protect your car down to below zero. Secondly, if a minor leak develops in your cooling system, the new "Prestone" anti-leak formula will seal it completely, in seconds. And finally, even if your car is old, don't worry about additional rust and cor- rosion building up in your cooling system because it simply can't happen. In fact, the new "Prestone" anti-leak, anti-rust, anti- corrosion formula is so effective, we put the Union Carbide guarantee right on the can. This winter, ask for real "Prestone" Anti-Leak Anti-Freeze, instead of some imi- tation. Or get a can and put it in yourself. We won't run out on you when it's forty below.
