Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - September 17, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETHBRIDGE HERAlD - FRIDAY. SEPTEMBER 17. 1971 First of new Cousteau adventures The unsinkable sea otter The sea otter could jcce be found inhabiting the coast line from Southern California, north along the Pacific coast and the Aleutian Islands to the northern parts of Japan. Hunted to near extinction by the Russians, Japanese and Americans, one small colony survived on Ara-chitka, protected by the Fur Treaty of 1911. On September 24, 10:00-11:00 p.m. on Channel 13, the CTV Television Network presents The Unsinkable Sea Otter, the first of the season's adventures in The Undersea World of Jacques Ccusteau. This hour long program traces the survival of a small herd of sea otters, first sighted off the coast of California in 1938, and that now lives in the Monterey and Morro Bay areas of California. The Unsinkable Sea Otter documents one of the heartening sagas of our wildlife - the survival of a species once almost lost through man's relentless hunting. Yet a cloud of controversy hangs over these small marine mammals. On the one side the sea otters are vigorously defended by the conservationists, and on the other commercial abalone fish ermen rue their return. Some of the local fishermen have taken up shooting these crea tures whose voracious appetites lead to the destruction of the abalone and shell fish beds. This Jacques Cousteau special is rich in the underwater photography that makes these programs a masterpiece of television viewing. Against their natural enemies, in harsh environments and in lands of climatic extremes, animals must adapt or perish. On Sunday September 17, 5:00-5:30 p.m. on Channel 13, the CTV Network's Untamed World examines the ability of animals to survive. On their own many animals are vulnerable to attack but in large groups or herds tbey find safety in numbers. Others carry their own protection around with them. Some rely on well developed senses of smell, sight or hearing to pro-tect them from their hunters. Survival shows film of the camel, a creature whose adaptation allows it to withstand the rigors of life in the barren deserts. Camels can go without drinking for up to seventeen days, and if green vegetation is available can live without water for several months. This strange animal can lose a quarter of its weight and not suffer any ill effects and then restore all the lost weight in ten minutes by drinking up to twenty five gallons of water. Untamed World also shows film of animals such as the penguin and seal, both of which survive in the hostile Antarctic continent. We also see film of the tiny hummingbird, a bird that consumes tremendous amounts of energy. Each day it needs to consume half its own weight in sugar to survive. Two of the most colorful animals of Africa, the zebra and the giraffe, have developed highly specialized characteristics to survive. Every creature is equipped with a special technique for survival, and this facility is a key factor in maintaining nature's balance in the Untamed World. GLENDALE MONUMENTAL CO.
