Lethbridge Herald (Newspaper) - September 17, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta - THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD - Friday, September 17, 1971 Chemicals used as pltosphates substitutes Hatmt prectpitatift* No immediate health threat in soap detergents TORONTO (CP) - The head of the federal health department's environmental division says there is no immediate health threat from chemicals used as substitutes for phosphates in detergents on sale in Canada. Dr. Adrian Booth was commenting in a telephone interview from Ottawa Thursday night about advice to housewives issued in Washington, D.C., earlier in the day by Dr. Jesse Steinfeld, United States surgeon-general, that they use phosphate detergents rather than substitutes. Phosphates promote the growth of plant life which uses I up the oxygen in lakes and rivers amd smothers other life, including fish. Three years on drug count EDMONTON (CP) - Frank Phillips, 22, of Vancouver was sentenced to three years on a charge of possession of marijuana for the purpose of trafficking. Phillips was arrested at Edmonton International Airport on arrival from Vancouver and 22 pounds of marijuana was found in a suitcase he was carrying. "It seems to me you were a courier between drug wholesalers in Vancouver and distributors here in Edmonton," said Mr. Justice William Sinclair after passing sentence. But, said Dr. Steinfeld, Some phosphate substitutes, e s p e-oially niirilotriacetic acid, are more dangerous than phosphates because of the health and environmental hazards they cause. Dr. Booth said he is not aware of any caustic products being used in Canada as a substitute for phosphates. But he said the Canadian government is carrying out tests on detergents with phosphate substitutes and expects interim results before the end of the year. Laundry detergents in Canada were restricted to a maximum of 20-per-cent phosphate content in August, 1970. This will be reduced to five per cent by Dec, 31, 1972. Dr. Booth said phosphate sub-stitutes possibly could cause a health hazard if used in great quantities over a long period. But the amount now getting into water supplies "is negligible from a health point of view." R. L. Turner, president of Colgate-Palmolive Ltd., said in a statement the company has not used nitrilctriacetic acid in its detergents since January, 1971, when U.S. officials first questioned the chemical's possible danger. LOVE POTION LONDON (CP) - A leading psychiatrist and sexologist reckons that grapefruit juice aids a person's sex life. At a medical conference, Dr. Gerald Camber explained that "the vitamin C contained in a grapefruit has the ingredients of health, inclination and imagination which go towards making a great lover." MIXED WEATHER-Eastern and western parts of the country are expected to receive norma] to above normal temperatures during September, while Manitoba, Saskatchewan and portions of Ontario can expect below normal readings, according to the 30-day weather outlook of the United States Weather Bureau, Most of the country can expect light to moderate precipitation, except Quebec and portions of Ontario which will receive heavy. Contraceptive pill advances ROME (Reuter) - A team of Italian scientists said today it has reached an advanced stage New fare for voyage on ship NEW YORK (CP) - Cunard Steam-Ship Co. has announced two bargain-fare voyages to Europe this fall on the Queen Elizabeth 2. For the price of a one-way regular fare, plus a supplemental charge for accommodation in either Britain or France, the customer will get a round trip from New York's pier 92 on the 65,000-ton ship. A Cunard spokesman said the fare reductions apply to Oct. 14 and 28 voyages from New York, to either Southampton or Havre. These will be the first QE2 sail- ings after Cunard officially leaves the Transatlantic Passenger Steamship Conference in October, freeing it from the conference-set rate structure. In a full-page advertisement in The Times, Cunard offers for |389 to take a passenger to Southampton and back-five days each way-and provide two nights in a London hotel, tours, breakfasts, a night at the theatre and ground transportation. The fare can soar to $908, depending on the level of accommodation chosen., A comparable trip to Havre, with two nights in Paris, is available from $415 up. These prices are for the Oct. 14 sail-tog. Rates for the Oct. 28 sailing are somewhat higher. of research with a new contraceptive pill. The pill would prevent fertilization without preventing ovulation as pills now in use do. The team, headed by Giuseppe Benagiano, is working on birth control methods at the University of Rome with financial support of the Rockefeller Foundation of New York. The scientists say it might be possible to implant a capsule beneath the skin which would release constant small doses of an artificial steroid for up to a year, during which time fertilization would be prevented. At present, the team is determining the exact size of the optimum daily dose. It will shortly start on a wide program of practical experiments. Firm signs $10 million loan pact NEW YORK (AP) - During his 25 years as a singer at the Metropolitan Opera, basso Jerome Hines says the high point of his career was his writing. Hines spoke of "the production of the opera I wrote, in this theatre," during a reception at the Met Wednesday night at which friends gathered to celebrate his 25th anniversary. He was referring to I Am The Way, an opera he wrote about the life of Jesus. Hines sings Jesus. "Now we're taking it to all the major cities," Hines said. "We did it in Dallas, with the symphony, and next spring we'll do it in Atlanta." Hines, who will be 50 Nov. 8, mode his Met debut Nov. 21, 1946, as the sergeant in Boris Godunov. New space rocket to be launched SEATTLE (AP) - A rocket as big as a 747 jumbo jet, carrying a smaller rocket the size of a 707 jet on its back, could be blasting into space and returning to earth to be launched again within the next few years. The major United States aerospace firms now are preparing final proposals for a reusable space shuttle that could cut the costs of the U.S. space program drastically. At present, each Saturn V rocket launch costs roughly $200 million and leaves little that can be used again. The space shuttle design calls for two separate vehicles-a booster and an orbital unit-that will be launched vertically into space while hooked together. At a height of about 40 miles they will separate and return to earth to land in the manner of conventional jet aircraft. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration could award the final contract for design and development anytime after October, when the current phase of development funding expires. NASA plans call for the first horizontal flight test in 1976 or 1977 and for the first manned shuttle flight in 1978. With less than half-dozen members present, the Senate quickly accepted without objection the bill the House of Representatives passed by a 356-49 vote Tuesday after two days of heated debate.
