Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 16, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta 24 THI LETHBRIDGE HERAID Wednesday, September 16, 1970 It's For Science Bruins Turn Guinea Pigs By TIIE CANADIAN PRESS Boston Brains turned guine pigs Tuesday, but it was all fo science. The National Hocke League's Stanley Cup champ ons are taking part in a pilo program that will eventually ai hockey scouts in delermlnin. the future of prospective proles sional players. "Let's face asked EI Enos, director of physical edu cation at Lo-yola University i Montreal which is conctuctini the tests with Boston Univei sily, "if Bobby Orr can't pas it, vho Orr, the NHL scoring cham pion and star defenceman, an< other Bruins are taking part i: the test which measures th fundamental skills of hockey skating, shooting, stickhandlini and passing. The program requires shoot Ing as many pucks as possible into a goal from 35 feet awaj within a 10-second period, free skating through a series of rub ber tires, then skating through the same obstacle course with t Jenkins' Mother Dies CHATHAM, Ont. (CP) Mrs. Ferguson Jenkins, 54, mother of pitcher Ferguson Jenkins of the Chicago Cubs, died in hospital Tuesday after a two-year illness. Delores Jenkins was blind for many years and at one time held a 215 average in a league of blind bowlers. She never saw her son pitch in a major league game, but once, in 1967, she and her hus- band travelled to Chicago for the season opener. She sat in a front-row seat and listened to the game on a portable radio. Jenkins, who didn't know shs was there, spotted her after taking his pitches. He walked over, shook her hand, said "Hi, and left. "I didn't want Fergie to know we were she said at the time. "I didn't want to upset him before the game that meant so much to him. -For a while I wished we hadn't come." HE WON IT Fergie won the game and they got together, the pres- sure off, for a tearful reunion. Medical problems as an in- fant, aggravated later in her only pregnancy, cost Mrs. Jenkins her sight but shs filled three scrapboofcs with press c I i p p i n g s she could never read. "Fergie is my six children in she said. "I don't need any other kids." Jenkins left the club Tues- day to return to Chatham. He rejoins the Cubs in Montreal Friday. Delores Jenkins will be bur- led Thursday in Maple Leaf Cemetery following services at William Street Baptist Church. puck and comparing the time difference, as well as passing skills. The Bruins are working out at London, Ont., with their Central Hockey League farm club, Okla- homa City Blazers. TAKES OUT GUESSES Enos said the chief aim of the program is to take the guess- work out of determining a hockey player's ability. "Let's say it's a scientific ap- proach to the game at least more scientific than we've been used to the last 50 said1 Enos. "Tlie tests are designed to show a coach the player's strengths as well as his weak- nesses." He said a coach can keep charts on the player's progress at these same skills over a one- month period, for two months, a season or several seasons. The tests are being conducted in leagues from bantam-age groups, through high school, col- lege and minor pro leagues. Buffalo Sabres, one of two new teams entering the league this year, suffered their second serious training camp casualty Tuesday when Al Hamilton broke a small bone in his left foot. The defenceman, who stopped a shot by Jim Watson during a scrimmage, was inadvertently nvolved in the Sabres' first cas- ualty Monday at their Peterbor- ough1, Ont., camp. He deflected a shot by vet- eran Ed Hoekstra that caught Lhe face mask of rookie goal- ender Rocky Farr, fracturing Farr's cheekbone. LIMIT WORRIES FRANCIS New York Ranger's general manager, Emile Francis, isn't griping about injuries. His main concern now is the player limit, Francis wants to see the eague raise the limit to 17 skaters and two goalies. The present rules call for 16 players and two goalies. He said a vote on the matter already has been taken, the re- ults of which should be known next rhonffl. Eight of the 14 earns must approve the rule change. The Rangers are working out at Kitchener, Ont. In Winnipeg, general manager Wren Blair watched his Minne- ota North Stars working out and was particularly impressed with the veterans and some of he newcomers. He noted particularly the ef- orts of winger Murray Oliver, bfcained in the offseason from 'oronto Maple Leafs, centre Valt McKechnie and winger- turned-centre Bobby Rousseau another acquisition from Mont- real Canadiens. Vo One Injured REGINA (CP) A fire early Tuesday destroyed the pari- nutuel building and a conces- ion stand at Exhibition Track nly hours after the last horse acing meet of the year ended.
