Slide kills hopes for Everest climb The Nepal foreign ministry announced the tragedy Thurs- day and said the deputy leader of the expedition ordered the Everest attempt halted. The avalanche killed ex- pedition leader Gerard Devoussoux of Chamonix and wiped out the expedition's first and second camps KATMANDU (AP) Tons of snow have buried alive the leader of a French expedition to Mount Everest and five Sherpa guides. The Himalayan avalanche Monday swept away the ex- pedition's hopes to put a Frenchman atop the world's highest peak for the first time.
