Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 14, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta 32-THE LETHBRIDGE September Strange things going EDMONTON (CP) A city alderman found circum- stances surrounding a rezon- ing application by developers Eskandar and Raphael Ghermezian an in- quiry into affairs at city haii was told Friday. Lawyer Tevie Miller testified at the inquiry, being conducted by Mr. Justice William Morrow, that his clients, Western Realty Ltd., wanted to challenge the rezon- ing and so he went to discuss the procedure of bylaw passage with Aid. Una Evans, who he said he considered knowledgeable about parliamentary matters on council. "There were some strange things happening in relation to the Westgate (shopping centre rezoning) Mr. Miller quoted Mrs. Evans as saying. He recalled her telling him about a bribe offer Mayor Ivor Deni felt he had received and about another alderman, Ron Hayter, who flew back to Ed- monton from a convention in Caracas to vote in favor of the rezoning bylaw. "She said it seemed a little unusual for Aid. Hayter to do Mr. Miller said of Mrs. Evans, adding she told him the action was inconsistant with Aid. Hayter's lifestyle. Mr. Miller also testified Aid. Evans told him that Aid. Bill McLean had been approached by supporters of the bylaw and was "made some form of The inquiry was set up after Aid. Alex Fallow said he was offered a gift by Raphael Ghermezian after the alderman voted in favor of the shopping centre -rezoning. The Ghermezians have, testified it was Aid. Fallow who demand- ed the money but was refused. RECALLS MEETING Mr. Miller recounted a meeting he said he had with Mayor Dent at which the mayor said a "feeler for a bribe" was made to him. Mayor Dent has denied the meeting took place. Mr. Miller said the mayor told him at that meeting that city contractor Norm Nilsen told Mr. Dent he had been ask- ed by the Ghermezian brothers to approach the mayor and see if he would be interested in a good job with them after he was finished as mayor, provided he changed his position and supported the rezoning. Mr. Nilsen has testified he never made such an offer and only met the Ghermezians a couple of times before he talk- ed to the mayor and neither of those times was the rezoning or the mayor discussed. Shortly after the meeting with Mayor Dent, Mr. Miller said he made a tape recording of his recollections of the meeting and has since turned it over to inquiry authorities. Mr. Miller said the mayor said he may have related two unrelated subjects when men- tioning the bribe feeler. ROSSITER AGENCIES LTD.
