Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 14, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta THE LETM8HIDQ1 HERALD Friday, StpMmovr 14, 1t73 21 New vegetable system urged EDMONTON (CP) All vegetables produced in Alberta should be channelled through a limited number of grading stations for the benefit of producers and con- sumers, the agricultural products marketing council recommended in a report yesterday Agriculture Minister Hugh Horner said farmers could sell through the grading stations or to other outlets but only after their produce was inspected. It the recommendation is followed, it would ensure producers of good returns for quality produce and con- sumers of a consistent supply, the minister said in a news release Administration could be by the government or by a producer board, a decision that would be left to the producers. The government would provide financial assistance in either case, he said. Following the establishment of the grading system, an all commodity producer board could be given power to set prices to producers or a teletype auction system for sales and the use of delivery quotas. Decisions as to the best system to be used again would be left to producers, Dr Horner said. The minister also said he has established a special com- mittee to explain the report to producers, to gauge support and to implement changes if possible. Britain told 'don't forget Canada' ALLEN MacEACHEN Defective LONDON (CP) Allan MacEachen, government leader of the Canadian House of Commons, says Britain should not lose sight of traditional ties with Canada and the Commonwealth because of any preoccupation with European Common Market diplomacy. The MP for the Nova Scotia constituency of Cape Breton Highlands-Canso. told the 19th Commonwealth parliamen- tary conference Thursday that Canada welcomed Britain's entry into the European com- munity earlier this year. "Certainly a prosperous Britain within the Common Market is oi more use to Us than a stagnant Britain out- side of said MacEachen. POSED PROBLEMS But in the short term, this deveupment also posed "serious economic problems lor Canada About 50 per cent of Canada's industrial exports to Britain would be hit by the loss ot the old system of Com- tnonweaith preferential tariffs as Britain gradually adopts the taxing system used by the community. Virtually all Canadian agricultural ex- ports to the United Kingdom would be similarly affected. MacEachen acknowledged that a relatively small propor- tion of total Canadian exports are sold to Britain, "but we are still certain to lace disrup- tion in some sectors of the economy." He told the first plenary ses- sion of the week-long confer- enco wnich opened Wednesday, that Canada hopes the Common Market's attempts to work out new relationships with eastern Europe, Japan and the United States will not obscure the im- portance of the Com- monwealth "We in Canada have been exploring ways to attract and hold the attention ot the Common Market and we sincerely hope that the preoc- cupations of the community will not make this im- possible, the minister added 1973 cars NU-MODE HOMES LTD.
