"After all, it was the Smothers Brothers who gave me my first chance on he said. Campbell's show, "Chevrolet Presents The Very First Glen Campbell Television will be colorcast on the NBC Television Network Sun- day, Sept. 16. Glen's other guests are Burt Reynolds and Sonny and Cher. The long-standing friendship between Campbell and the Smothers Brothers is a case of opposites attrac- ting, Campbell's rural background (he grew up on a farm near Delight, Ark., and was one of 12 children) differs from the more cosmopolitan Smothers Brothers upbringing. In addition, Campbell does not make political references on the air. The Smothers Brothers have done so. Off-camera, Campbell and the com- edians do not share the same political outlook. HIGH ON LIST Yet, Tom and Dick put Campbell high on their list of friends. Said Dick: "Glen is one of the world's best musicians. He doesn't fool around. He doesn't try to fake it. He's got genuine talent. We respect him. We may disagree with him in many ways about many things but that has not diluted our admiration for the man. "What is the basis for our friendship? It certainly isn't our past or present television associations. The important thing is, Bobby Curtola, the inter- nationally known pop music performer, opens his first show of the new season telecasting Satur- day. September 15 at 7 p.m. with special guests Chubby Checker and Priscilla Wright. Bobby's first guest is Chubby Checker, whose song "The Twist" was a hit around the world. Their TV show was cancelled four years ago in a djspute over censorship with CBS. Glen is a decent human being, an honest person with an open mind. In the summer of 1968, the Smothers Brothers made him a television per- sonality as host of "The Summer Brothers Smothers a warm weather replacement for their "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour." Campbell's subsequent weekly series, "The Glen Campbell Goodtime which ran for four- and-a-half years, was plac- ed in the time period formerly occupied by the Smothers Brothers. As for the comedy pair, they have been busy but not always on television. Tom has produced one movie and has starred in another. Dick, the sportsman of the two, was an auto racer at California's Laguna Seca race course. Now, he skis a lot. Last season, their televi- sion appearances included visits to the Julie Andrews and Bill Cosby shows. This month, they are scheduled to tape a guest visit to "NBC Follies" for the fall, Dick Smothers said: "We'd like to get back into the swing of TV with a lalk show aimed at the young.
