Shep- herd and Buchanan hail a splendid meeting in that beautiful and pro- gressive farming district ot Sundial. Gibson, one of the intelligent; and wide-awake farmers of the riis- tricl, presided and spoke strongly in favor of the reciprocity measure and the Ciindidale. The opponents of reci- procity in Ihi.s section are as few as the poor farmers, who are to be any. The climax of the lour was a rous- ing meeting at Diamond City on Tuesday evening. Ltd It is true the reduction Is not as I Sreat as many would desire The farmers, throngb their delegation at Ottawa, asked that iha duty be re- moved entirely. Mr. Buchanan, the Liberal candidate, has stated on the liublic platfornp. nnd in his address to the electors published in the vari- ous newspapers of the constituency, that he i-i in favor of removing the duty entirely. Mr. Magrath, on tho other has given no such state- j ment or- promise. He dare not do it, for his whole party is against such a' Policy, while ii v'ory largo part of the i party is in favor of larger re- ductions, or the entire removal of the duty. There is reason to believe that the Liberal party will sooirer or later remove the duty on agricultural entirely, and Mr. Buch- anan's efforts will be towards that] end as -joon as possible. But. if tho Conservative party is returned -'to power, the farmers of the country I have absolutely no hope of either re duction or entire removal of the duty, nut as It is, the reduction of the duty will average about twenty- five per cent, of the present dut as will be seen from the above list, j The reduction of the rates of duty by two and a half p-sr cent, on some and five per cent .on others, amounts to on the articles mentioned above. The total duty under the pro- s'fnt tariff would .be and un- der the proposed reciprocity duty SSO.OG, a reduction of J2JI.80, or about a quarter less. That, is something on j those few articles. In addition the duties are lowered from two and a i half to five per cent, on farm WBK- 1 ons and paints, threshing machines, windstackers, .baggers, weighers, hay loaders, potato dig- gers, "f-aed' cutters, grain crushers, fanning mills, hay ledders, field roll- ers, and other implements. A vote for Buchanan means i chance of getting more, but a voti for. :.Magrath nveans a certainty of getting nothing, as far as he is able o prevent it.
