Phone 327-3141 episode in The Human Journey series entitled "Leadership" airing September 29 on CTV, an examination of the tendency of some leaders either to take the role of leader or hawe that role given to them. The literature on the sub- ject Is vast and the ques- tions are numerous. What motivates people to follow one man? What motivates one man to want to lead them? What is It In the nature of the group that U can best define itself when U is led by a man of strength, be he good or evil? What is discussed in the show Is not just the qual- ities which give force to leadership, but the needs of the group to be led. What was the nature of the relationship of qualities and needs between Hitler and the Germans? Were these the same between Churchill and the British? If some of the qualities and needs are constant, can they be scal- ed down to the level of boss and employee, scout- master and scout, father and son? Among those interview- ed and examined In the show are: General J. A, Dextraze. Chief of the defense staff for Canada whose definition of the sub- ject is perhaps the most in- cisive. He says, "Leadership is the art of influencing others to do willingly what is required In order to achieve an aim or a goal." Gordle Howe, an example of leadership in which the leader is engaged directly with his followers; and businessman Don McCaskill who believes leadership is a challenge. The producers of the show also examine military leaders of Canada and the United States past and present, examine labour unions and the influence of the family on leaders. The Human Journey is produced by Jerry Lawton with executive producer Larry Hertzog, Historical research is by Jessica Markland. The show is ful- ly sponsored by the London Life Insurance Company through Goodls, Goldberg, Soren Ltd. of Toronto.
