The first and foremost tip: Read the manual. Often the only problem is a blown fuse or a tripped circuit breaker something that can be remedied easily without the trouble and ex- pense of a repairman's visit. Read manual The manufacturers suggest that the service manual be at- tached to the appliance for reference when something goes wrong. Home ranges often cause trouble simply because the clock timers are left at the wrong setting. A spokesman for Moffat. a major manufac- turer, says a quick check of fuses and the clock setting before calling a repairman may save a service bill. Refrigerators usually need little attention but a careful watch for ice buildup and an occasional wash with baking soda and warm water will help keep them operating smoothly and smelling clean. Clean coils The manufacturers recom- mend that dust and lint be removed from condenser coils every few months to keep them at top efficiency. If the refrigerator stops, check the fuses and electrical connections and ensure the temperature control is turned on. If water is dripping on the floor, check that the defrost pan is in the proper position. Dishwashers should be load- ed properly for maximum ef- ficicncv. Smaller dishes should be stacked closest to the water jet to ensure that the cleaning action isn't blocked. If dishes aren't getting clean, vary the amount of detergent or experiment with different brands. WeeWhimsv The makers also warn against cleaning wooden bowls or utensils in dish- washers as they may warp or crack. Old family china also should not go into the washer, as it may harm the glaze. Newer china, of course, won't be harmed, but sterling silver may become pitted and plastic dishes should be check- ed for dishwasher safe guarantees. If the dishwasher won't start, check that the latch is engaged properly and go over fuses, circuit breakers and electrical connections. Most modern appliances are relatively maintenance free but some attention and a little common sense may save time and rnonev. fHwcuuTi 5 of the 5 3 WEEK I SUGAR..
