It's a chancy business at best, but one which draws thousands of children to parade their stuff before casting direcors in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago. Some say the big buck is the main lure. Otners say it's moth- ers trying to live vicariously through a little starlet. The mothers say the kids love it, many directors say half their little heads are getting messed up and the agenceis proclaim thay have screened out those who would rather be "messing around" or playing baseball. The directors are generally not kind to the mothers. "Sometimes I think if I told a roomful of mothers I needed a kid with one arm, half of them would go home and chop off an arm." says Sam Sperber, sales representative of Director's Circle. The directors generally look for the spontaneous kids, one who look as if they could get their T-shirts so dirty that su- per detergent is needed.
