Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 6, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta agat Mid-air collision not in Beachcomber script IF YOU CLIP THIS AD OUT OF THE PAPER YOU WILL RECEIVE A REWARD! RICH'S NUT HUT A mid-air collision, not called for In the script, was only one of the problems this past summer during filming of The Beachcombers in Gibsons, B.C. The "airplanes" were radio controlled models being flown by two experts for an episode of the popular Sunday evening series The Beachcombers, starring Bruno Gerussi, returning toCBC television for its third season September 15 at 7 p.m. Air Canada jumbo jet captain Bert Sanders of Vancouver, and a young hobbyist named George Wallenby, were hired by Beachcombers producer Elie Savole to fly their radio controlled models in a simulated dogfight over the waters near Gibsons, while cameras recorded the action. It all takes place in an episode called Fortunes of War, when young Gus, played by series newcomer Stefan winfield. 10, annoys old Relic, played by Robert Clothier, by flying his model plane on the dock, Relic charges at the little plane with a pike pole and smashes It because he doesn't tike the noise of its buzzing motor. From then on, it's war between Gus, the city boy, and Old Relic the rascally log salvager. Gus cons Nick Adonidas Into lending him money to buy a model plane. But instead of an inexpensive little plane controlled by wires, Gus buys a radio controlled model, much more sophisticated and expensive. ENHANCED Gus then buzzes Old Relic, who becomes so enraged that he gets a plane of his own, a black model of a Curtis P-40, the type used during the Second World War by the Flying Tigers in China. The "war" escalates into a furious dogfight, which ends in the drink after the mid-air collision. That's not how the script went, but that's what happened. The planes were fished out of the salt water within a few minutes after they crashed, cleaned ashore and repaired for the next morning's filming. In another scene, Capt. Sanders was flying Gus's model plane for him out of camera range. The plane had six eggs stored in its "bomb bay" and once, when Sanders pulled it out of dive abruptly, the eggs tumbled out by accident, peppering cameraman Cyrus Block while he was still looking through his viewfinder. Block was surprised, not injured Because of rainy weather on the west coast, the worst that producer Elie Savoie can ever remember, filming of the Beachcombers is behind schedule. As of the last week in July, his crew was a month behind and could HOBBY BREW CENTRE SvpptlttindCoiiiuHinl For tin Anntnir Wtm 4 Bur Mikir WESTMINSTER PLAZA 327-0569 do nothing about it except wait for sunshine, to catch up Savoie and his people will have filmed 23 Beachcombers episodes by the time December rolls around Weather permitting. In its second season on CBC television last year, The Beachcombers consistently gained high audience ratings as the most-watched Canadian produced series next to NHL hockey.
