Were you pleased with what you had in your garden this Each color has a definite influence of its own Red is exhilarating, yellow is energizing and promotes a sense of well being, green, the color of nature, is soothing and refreshing, blue tends to create an atmosphere of serenity and relaxation, pur- ple is considered dramatic The shades of the different colors makes a difference Take for instance yellow, cer- tain shades of this give an im- pression of cheapness or even make one feel bilhous. A slightly different tone could be quite pleasing, suggesting warmth, gold and sunshine With practise, you can har- monize all the different colors and shades and tones of these colors In the garden, color is one of the annual group's greatest assets You can create so many beautiful pictures with these fast growing flowers Now. when gardening chores are beginning to lessen, is the time to look through the different seed catalogues and start planning new com- binations, ordering new varieties, as well as keeping some of the old favorites. Yellow is one of the brightest colors in the garden, adding that lovely touch of sunshine in beds and borders and elsewhere One of my favorites in this class is the mangold, tall and dwarf There are so many different and outstanding varieties to choose from These are ideal for the background or borders and beds Nasturtiums have alwavs been a choice plant for years, with their pretty flowers and rniid scent The trailing variety is ideal for hanging baskets The snapdragon is a most rewarding annual, producing colorful spikes all summer )ong suitable for bouquets and arrangements Other yelJow flowers are poppies, calen- dula celosia, nemesia, pansy and nnnia Pink and red are also very popular colors You can have an all pink garden or use in combination with other colors Pink with grey leaved plants are particularly nice Pink and veNow or pink and blue are pleasing com- binations Some good pink or red annuals are zinnias, snapdra ons, phlox, cosmos. all excellent for cutting and blooming all summer long, balsam, celosia, asters, clarkia, dianthus, dahlia, ger- anium, godetia, nasturtium, pansy, petunia, poppy, sweet pea. verbena There are fewer blue flowers than most other colors, so these are usually sought after by gardeners An all blue garden is seldom seen, but used as accent plants here and there among others they are quite showy. Blue and yellow making a striking contrast Blue and white are also nice as are blue and red The shades of each should be chosen with care so they do not clash and harmonize with each other. Blue is nice around a pool, reflecting into the water For blue flowers you might choose cornflower, lobelia, nigella. ageratum, phacelia, larkspur, aster, forget me not, stock, sweet pea. and one of my favorites as a dot plant here and there in the border is Salvia fannacea, with its attractive spikey stems and greyish foliage. It is excellent for arrangements White goes with any flower and looks cool by day and is more easily seen in the evening It also separates the strong colors from each other I don't know whether I would like an all white garden (and I have heard of them) but I do like to include some in my garden You would use petunias, ageratum. loebha. phlox, sweet pea, stock, alyssum, snapdragon, nicotiana. cornflower, ger- anium and lobelia Small quantities of these stronger colors will effective- ly complement or offset the paler colors With a little im- agination and practise, one could work out any number of compatible color schemes Marble stains Marble, being a porous material, is subject to staining, if spilled material is not cleaned up promptly Greasy spills, as from butter oil and cream, should be removed with a water and ammonia solution Organic stains irom tea, coffee and dyes can be rinsed away with clean water Quick action is the key to preventing staining, no matter what kind of spill Sears SATURDAY SPECIALS LIMITED QUANTITIES STARTS A.M.
