Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 6, 1974, Lethbridge, Alberta Page f Emergency medics Tuesday, Sept. 10 encounter madman The sight of professional football star Larry Csonka gnashing his teeth and roaring with rage may not be frightening to other football players, but to ac- tors playing paramedics on the series, it was so frightening it was funny. Csonka, an All-Pro runn- ing back of the Miami Dolphins who moves to the World Football League next year, plays a worker in a chemical plant who becomes psychotic after breathing fumes from a tank he is cleaning in the season premiere episode "The Screenwriter' telecasting Sept, 14 on CTV. The action called for him to defy the efforts of a team of paramedics to sub- due him within an empty metal tank and to throw them around like tenpins. For the 240-pound Csonka, it was an easy assignment. For the actors, it was a terrifying experience, Randolph Mantooth, who stars as John Gage, was the least afraid, since he is athletic and figured his moves would be like choreography and he wouldn't hurt himself when he landed. Kevin Tighe, his co-star, has to administer the knockout hypodermic according to the script, Marco Lopez, who plays a paramedic named Lopez, was scared his bad back would put him in hospital if Csonka threw him across the tank. Diminutive Tim Donnel- ly had the worst assignment, since Csonka had to hold him upside down and shake him. The temperature inside the empty tank was about 120 degrees and the cameramen were poised on the upper rim, with one carrying a hand-held camera inside the tank. It was Csonka's debut in drama but he seemed quite calm. They did his close-up when, with a menacing voice, he invited the paramedics to come down to get him. The reverse shot showed the men gingerly starting down the ladder into the tank, Then came the master shot when the 240- pounder began to seize them and toss them around, meanwhile snarl- ing and roaring like the madman he was supposed to be. When director George Fenady finally called everybody burst out laughing and the onlookers out of camera range burst into applause, Csonka immediately said to Lopez, "Are you okay? I didn't hurt your back, did Lopez's eyes opened wide and he replied in astonishment, "It doesn't hurt for the first time in a Csonka grinned and said, "You owe me twenty bucks, Lopez.
