Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 5, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta No need for island to disappear into ocean Rattler slithers out This three-foot-long rattlesnake slithered from its hiding spot near Medicine Hat recently when its solitude was disturbed. Cold-blooded, rattlesnakes need shade dur- ing the heat of the day and found this animal hip bone the proper refuge. HALIFAX (CP) There Is no need for Sable Island to dis- appear into the sea, a vicitim of wind erosion, says biology professor Ian McLaren of Dal- hoiisie University. "Taken care of, Sable Island can become he said. "There is no need for it to dis- appear. Such islands can grow." Dr. McLaren told a meeting of the Mining Society of Nova Scotia here that the island had suffered for hundreds of years from man's impact, but now is in a position to be repaired. He said that the proliferation of roads on the delicately bal- anced island is a danger. When the grass is broken by tire tracks the sand is exposed, ac- celerating erosion. "Some places which were narrow roads in 1952 now are wide expanses of drifting he said. The need to prevent drifting of the sands of which the island is built1 was also stressed by Lorne Walker of Calgary, the environment officer for Mobile Oil Canada Ltd. Mobil, which uses 140 miles of the province's coast as a drill- ing platform, was the first com- pany to strike oil in the mas- sive exploration program being carried out by several com- panies off the east coast. He said all employees sent to Sable Island are asked not to .walk on the grass which binds the sand dunes together. They are also briefed on the locations of seal breeding grounds and bird nesting sites. The precautions are necessary because with up to 90 people on the island "they could upset a reasonably delicate balance of nature." Mr. Walker said that feet of snow fences were erected between the dunes last fall as an experiment to stabilize the sands. The experiment -was only par- tially successful because not all the fences were properly posi- tioned and horses had used them occasionally as rubbing posts in a terrain devoid of trscsf But he said the sand had started to fill in ths fences as planned. Dr. MacLaren said the island supported head of cattle in the 18th century, when its par- tial cover of soil was ploughed in an attempt to grow farm pro- duce. Then 'the wind eroded the thin soil cover away except for a few small patches that re- main. The horses have been on the island since 1783, he said. With the hand of man removed from, their breeding, the horses have reverted to a more primitive stock. Weak horses die In the win- ter, he said. Last year, about 100 died, leaving 200 to 250 in the self-regulated population. He said Sable Island is the only breeding ground of the Ipswich sparrow, and the future of the bird depends on the con- tinued existence of the island.
