NORTH PHONE 328-3357 the project was intended to help farmers improve the thelic value of the environment for other of the province and twirUis. Because of pres- sures and the lack of avalklile labor, many tenners have not hsu the money or the lime to their farmsteads ir, a con- dition tluit rices credit to the surroursding countryside. Originally tliere were to have been 12 crews, composed of 12 students, each tidying up farm- steads in different parts of the province. However, because of a shortage of funds this was cut to one. The farms which border on each side of the Highway 2 be- tween Edmonton and Calgary were choseo. It was felt that the Isrgest number of people would enjoy the aesthetic im- provement because it is the most frequently used highway In Alberta. Also it seemed reasouabie to expect that one crew could get this number of farmsteads in order by the end of the season. Made up of 12 university stu- dents from several faculties, the crew started work on farms at the Edmonton end of the highway in early May. They progressed well down the high- way by the end of August which was when this year's project finishes. The crew consisted of a sup- ervisor, a cook and ten work- ers. They lived in a completely self-contained camp containing three-sleeping trailers, a cook- ing and eating trailer, a utility and washroom trailer, and a power unit. As the students pro- gressed south, they moved their camp with them. The supervisor of the crew went ahead of the otlters to call on farmers to explain the pro- ject and to find out whether they wanted to participate. There was tremendous enthusi- asm. A farmer who wanted to take advantage of the service liad to sign an agreement giv- ing his permission for the crew to come out to his porperty and to outline the work to be done.
