A team of eight doctors per- formed the second operation and tire spokesman said today it would be at least five days "before any beneficial effects will be measurable." Mrs. Sims, the mother of an eight-month-old son, received the first transplant intravenous- ly June 23 to correct a blood disease that wiped out (lie abil- ity of her bone marrow to pro- duce red blood cells. The first graft, with marrow :aken from two of her brothers, but the transplanted material failed to thrive and lie second operation, with mar- row from one of the two broth- ers, was ordered. The hospital spokesman said Mrs. Sims "in all probability luld not have survived anoth- er six weeks." Two other attempts at mar- row transplantation, both at the Ontario Cancer Institute this year, were described as the only previous operations in Canada. The first patient died within three weeks of a hemorrhage and the outcome of the second was not known here.
