Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 4, 1973, Lethbridge, Alberta 14 THE LETHBRIDQE HERALD Doris Clark GirVs body value a sign of maturity DEAR DORIS: I have a 16-year-old daughter and I am concern- ed about pre-marital sex. This seems to be more acceptable in today's socie- ty than I would like to see. However, rather than bury my head in the sand, I wonder if you have any booklets which could help me explain things in a more acceptable way to a teen-ager. Not The Ostrich-Type Mother. DEAR MOTHER: Things change so fast that most of us more mature folk experience a sort of cultural shock! Pre-marital sex is far more common now than it used to be. A special concern of the social workers is to help our young people to think through the responsibilities they take when they in- dulge in it. We might try to explain at least some of it this way: A half century ago it was unthinable that a cou- ple on a casual date should kiss goodnight. Move up a few years and we find the word "necking" getting into more prominence. Oh, yes, parents still stuck around when their favorite young couple were spending an evening in their dimly lit livingroom. One social worker ex- plains today's more intimate-type affection this BAALIM WHOLESALE LTD. 205 10th STREET SOUTH PHONE 327-8587 Headquarters for...... Where a previous decade condoned kissing iand affection only above the neck, today presents the young person with far more opportunities for in- timacy. What our young people or many of them fail to realize is the responsibility which goes with their decision, a decision which involves not only the ex- pression of feeling but also the assuming of the conse- quences. To contract or to communicate a veneral disease is serious business, and the production of a baby could be a traumatic experience. Any girl or man has the right to stand off from the crowd and make an in- dividual decision It is a sign of maturity when a girl values her own body and has the courage to refuse to permit any liber- ties, even though an impor- tunate young man argues that "everybody's doing it." In any case, no informa- tion should be kept from her. She must make her own decision I'm sending you my list of recommend- ed books. DEAR DORIS: The old goat down the street is cheating on his wife left, right and centre. As soon as his wife leaves for work, his girl friend shows up. I think I should tell this woman about her skunk of a husband and his girl friend. My husband told me to keep out of it. He says she wouldn't believe me iand that a wife like her is already dead from the waist down and the neck up. She also looks old enough to pass for his mother. M.A.D. DEAR M.A.D. Keep out of it. How do you know the way things stand between them? All you will succeed in doing is making bad her. Be a good neighbor instead. Give her the love you have to give. Not bad news. DEAR DORIS: It must be that the influence of a life such as Lester Pearson's goes on and on. Surely proof of our immortality' Did you hear the former Moderator of the United Church speak at the funeral7 I think I will never forget it. He quoted from the book of Ecclesiastes "The Wisdom of a humble man will lift up his head, and will seat him among the great." Mike has wisdom and humility and greatness How we need such men and women in public (and private) life today! Yet I am sure there are many valiant souls, trying, against remendous odds, to right the wrongs in this seemingly confused day and generation. Thank you too, Doris, for your own work. I always enjoy reading you and ad- mire you for "following the gleam'' and playing your flute as you go. Keep on keeping on, even when the going gets difficult, as it is bound to do at times. Irene DEAR IRENE: Why, I have it easy' You can judge from my letters that there are indeed valiant souls who are mak- ing difficult lives count for something. I'm lucky I have family, friends. My greatest concern is for the pile of mail which brings to me the heart-searching thoughts of troubled Canadians. Getting a message of hope across by means of a letter or a brief paragraph in a newspaper column takes both im- agination and a lot of op- timism.
