Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - September 3, 1970, Lethbridge, Alberta Thursday, Iiptimbtr S, 1970 THE LETHBRIDGE HERALD 17 Smiles: Face Signals Give You Away BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) Beware the "Oblong smile." That's when they're jusl pretending to enjoy your joke or off-the-cuff remark. Dr. Ewart Grant of Birming- ham University's psychiatry department uses that name for the smile all of us use when we know we have to be polite. Grant has noted more than 100 "face-to-iace" signals, in- cluding smiles, by which we give ourselves away. "The way we use these sig- nals can give extremely valu- able information about the way we are he said. "The mouth is fre-. quently used to express emo- tions and it is very difficult to disguise these. work will be useful in psychiatry because it will ena- ble doctor's to see how pa- tients react to certain ques- tions about their only in what they say, which might be disguised, but through their non-verbal sig- nals." There are other eyebrow twitch, the frown, the eyelid lowering, the moving the smile is an easy clue to catch. The basic smiles, said Grant, are: "how do you do" smile which tends to lin- ger in family greetings. Only the upper teeth are uncovered and the mouth generally is only slightly open. "typically non- social smile" occurifiiig when someone is happy by himself. The lips curve back and up biit remain together so there's no dental display. smile that oc- cur's "in stations of pleasur- able excitement." The mouth is open, the lips curled right back and both upper and lower teeth can be seen. one is often seen in coy girls. It's much the same as the upper smile except that the lower lips is drawn in between the teeth. Grant said it implies that, the smiler feels in some way sub- ordinate to the person she is meeting. Merv Griffin TV Show To Move To Hollywood NEW YORK (AP) The Merv Griffin Show will move permanently to Hollywood next Raby Posted To West CALGARY (CP) The na- tional parks branch announced here that G. J. Raby has been appointed super visor of the western region, replacing K. B Mitchell who retired recently. Mr. Raby has been with the parks branch since 1947, except 'for three years with another section of the department of In- dian affairs and northern de- velopment. week, where it will have less talk and more music and com- edy. Griffin lias been pressing CBS for months to make the change in the hope that it would boost his late-night ratings against the Johnny Carson show on NBC. In most weeks Griffin is second and Dick Cavett of ABC third. Griffin contended that he could put on a better show if he did not have to compete in the New York pool for talent against Carson, Cavett and David Frost's syndicated show.
