Staff faulted for death JUST BUSINESS President Calvin Coohdge once said "The business of America is just business OTTAWA (CP) The gov- ernment is considering "other options" in an attempt to re- duce lumber industry layoffs, but Industry Minister Alastair Gillespie refused to give details in the Commons Wednesday. Mr Gillespie, replying to Ed Broadbent, the New Democratic Party's parliamentary leader, said an announcement will be made when the government has finished studying the options. Mr Broadbent had asked what the government intends to do about widespread layoffs in the lumber industry, the latest of which was workers in British Columbia. He said similar layoffs are expected i" Quebec and New Brunswick He Urban Af- fairs Minister Barney Danson whether the government is considering making more mortgage money available to promote housing starts and thus create lumber industry jobs, but the minister only stated how much the govern- ment has already made available in mortgage as- sistance HIT HARD The lumber industry has been hit hard by a drastic decline, the latest details of which were released earlier Wednesday. Phone 327-5020 EDMONTON (CP) A cor- oner's jury recommended that the staff of an institution where a 15 year old girl hung herself Aug. 15 find "a more adequate method of communication The girl, Karen Marie Visser of Edmonton, com- mitted suicide at 10 40 p m after being locked in a deten- tion room for gross mis- behaviour at Mapleridge Child Care Centre, where she was a voluntary resident The jury recommendations came after an inquest reveal- ed the girl had frequently talk- ed about committing suicide to staff members who didn't take the girl seriously The jury was told the girl committed smcide following a session with her parents and social workers in wluch she was told she would be made a temporary ward of the province if her behaviour didn't change within two or three months Marilyn Nenninger, a child care therapist on duty when she was put into detention, said the girl was moved into the cell at 4 30 p m because she was not responding to re- quests to settle down During the afternoon and evening, Mrs Nenninger checked the girl every half hour, and said she seemed to be settling down DIDN'T LIKE ROOM Candace Jersey, child care therapist, came'on duty at 8 p.m and said "Karen didn't appear to be m great distress, although she didn't like being in the deten- tion room Miss Dorsey testified that Karen said "if you don't let me out, I'm' goiw something." She said she didn't think the statement un- usual because similar threats were often made. When the next check was made at 10 25 p.m., Karen was hanging by the neck from a sheet attached to the wire mesh which made up onejwall of the room. Court was told the girl was voluntarily admitted because her parents were having dif- ficulty controlling her Richard Ramsay, director of treatment service at_the_ said Karen was involv- ed to some degree with drugs and had potentially dangerous delinquent behavior. Court was told the girl had been "closing herself off" emotionally since summer, and that she had made a bet with a friend as to which one would commit suicide first.
