SOMMERFELDT Soil Scientist Dryland salinity (white alkali) is a major problem in many areas throughout the prairie region It is es- timated that salinity seriously affects over 000 acres of dryland in Alberta as well as large acreages in Saskatchewan and Manitoba, and the problem is increasing significantly each year Dryland salinity results when water in excess of what the soil can hold per- colates down to a solid layer, then moves downslope and reappears at the surface As the water moves through the soil it becomes laden with dissolved salts, which, when the water evaporates, accumulate on the surface and sahnize the soil There are two areas of concern in this problem of dryland salinity the area where the water enters the soil (recharge area) and the downlsope salt-affected area (discharge area) Both these locations must be considered in efforts to solve the salinity problem Drainage of the salt- laden water from the dis- charge area is the logical solution, but the cost is generally prohibitive No method of chemical treat- ment has been found to be effective At the present time the only practical means of control is through effective management of the recharge area Any prac- tice that avoids the buildup of excess water in these areas or that utilizes the excess water before it gets to the discharge area will help to alleviate the problem Experiments at the Lethbndge Research Sta- tion indicate that routine summerfallowing in a recharge area is a practice that frequently aggravates the problem Without a crop to utilize the precipitation during the tallow year, excess water often is available to per- colate down through the soil Re-cropping to cereals or forages will help to pre- vent this Forage crops are more effective because of their higher moisture re- quirements and early spr- ing growth ASTRO FEEDS (LETHBRIDGE) LTD.
