M. A. KHAN lexicologist Alberta is well on its way to being rid of warble flies. The program to exter- minate this pest was started in 1967 jn Wetaskiwin County. It is now active in 56 of the 65 counties and other local jurisdictions in the province. About 90 per cent of the cattle in Alberta, more than three million head, are covered by the program. In Saskatchewan, a similar program began in 1972 in the Agricultural Ex- tension Districts of Maple Creek, Eastend, Leader, and Swift Current and is being expanded. Several similar programs have been started by producer groups in Manitoba. The cattle are treated once per year with one of three insecticides, Co-Ral, Ruelene, and Neguvon. A fourth insecticide, Tiguvon, will soon be added to this list When used as directed, these insecticides are safe and effective for killing cattle grubs, the lar- val stages of the warble fly. The insecticides can be used in the fall or spring, but preferably in the fall. Otherwise, most of the cattle in the county are grub-free. We are evaluating the Saskatchewan program in the Maple Creek district where the number of grubs per animal dropped from 20.0 to 3.2 after one year. TJie success of the programs depends upon two elements. First, all the cattle within an area must be treated. For the first three years, all cattle should be treated in the fall 'followed by a spring treat- ment only for those cattle that have warbles. After that, it should be necessary only to treat in the fall the cattle brought into the area and in the spring those herds that have warble- infested cattle. Second, the local jurisdictions in the program must be grouped to form blocks of treated areas. Areas in which war- ble control is not practised will continue to be sources of infestation for nearby warble-free areas. STILL SELLING FOR LESS STERN'S CUT-RATE FURNITURE 314 3rd St. S.
