The store also carries hard- bound books including the atest fiction, religious, clas- iqal, educational, business 'and hildren' books, as well as ugh school text books. A 20 foot long wall section f the store is devoted entirely o magazines. Shan's Stationery was started n Calgary seven years ago by Ir. Maleschok and his wife, hirley Ann, both of whom aye had a life long interest n books. They noted that people n shopping centres always rpwded around the racks con- ainiiig paperbacks. They rea- med that if they opened a :ore in a shopping centre and :ocked it with a good selection f paperback books, people puld come in and .browse round. Their first store, which they ailed Shan's (an abbreviation Shirley Ann) was an im- mediate success and it wasn't ng before they had branched out with a similar store in Ed- monton. Mr. Maleschok feels one of the main reasons Shan's Sta- tionery stores have proved so successful because they are meeting a real. reading 'need. tie finds that.people are read: ing a lot mare" these days now that they have more Insure time. While "'whOrdone-its' are still popular, there is a growing market for" self improvement books of all kinds, Mr." Males- chok states.
