Lethbridge Herald, The (Newspaper) - October 27, 1971, Lethbridge, Alberta 30 THE LETHBRID6E HERAID -40A FURNITURE AND October 27, 1971 43 TRAILERS CAMPERS FOR SALE OR LOANS A bid pipeline t CALGAKY (CP) Canadian Pacific LU1. hit stiff resistance Tuesday in its bid to purchase 50 per cent of Commercial Solids Pipe Line Co. of Toronto. Eight oil companies and the governments of Alberta and Saskatchewan threw up the opposition at a Canadian Transport Commission hearing. The intervenes said Canadian Pacific's acquisition would inhibit competition because of its interest hi other modes of transportation. "A commodity pipeline which is partly controlled by a railway is bound to operate at an unfair disadvantage in respect of traffic which tan be carried either by rail or by said Calgary Lawyer J. M. Robertson who presented a submission for the oil companies. CONTROVENE ACT He said Canadian Pacific's acquisition would contravene the National Transportation Act which aims to keep various modes of transportation competitive. A Saskatchewan government submission said there is no case more important to the future of transportation in this country. Saskatchewan Attorney-General Roy Romanow issued a statement saying: "We are absolutely opposed to the CPR owning both the railroad and pipeline, thus creating an unhealthy monopoly to the detriment of the public." Commercial Solids is engaged in research and development on commodity pipelines which would carry sulphur and other solids in a slurry from southwestern Alberta to Vancouver. The oil companies said that "necessary stockpiling of sulphur has already become a serious problem which will he magnified in the future unless a larger share of world markets can be captured." "A major factor in achieving a competitive price is the conditions for transportation of this Mr. Robertson said. Commercial solids, now eon-trolled by Shell Canada buy opposed was incorporated to develop commodities by pipeline but no lines have been undertaken.
