We're doing all we can." It was the third day of a cold that stunned the city with temperatures ranging between 10 above and 10 below zero. Paul had been working between 12 and 16 hours a day on the AAA road service truck. He'd already lost count of the num- ber calls for starting help he serviced. He had ruined one clutch on a truck, found sleep next to im- possible and the steady diet of hastily gulped coffee and cold hamburgers had soured his sto- mach. His sympathy for the stranded drivers had long since vanished. While accompanying Paul on his rounds, I had a chance to talk to him about the reasons this seemingly endless rush ol calls for starting help occurred. He said, wearily, "Sure it's cold: But in this weather most people don't have start- ing trouble. It's the people who don't take care their cars. It's the people who come into the station in September and who you ask 'How about a tune- and they ai.swsr, 'Maybe later.' They have the trouble. "They'll spend more time waiting for a road service truck than it would take to do a thor- ough tune-up in the first place. Some of thcia lose more money in missed wages than a tune-up would cost. But the ironic tiling is they'll end up getting the time-up after they've had trou- ble." I asked Paul, "You talk about tune-up t of them com- plain about a run down bat- tery." He s ni i 1 e d and answered, "Anybody's going to run down his battery trying to start an engine that's in lousy shape. Sure a strong battery is impor- taut. But the other parts of the engine have to be in top shape to start in this weather." We stopped at the next house. A young housewife and her two chiVren were shivering in the garage, wailing for ns. "What's the matter, i Paul "M car won't start. My bat- tery is dead. And UK kids are three hours late for she said. "The kids did not look as anguished as their mother. Paul connected the jumper cables from his truck to the en- gine. After a few sputters the car started. "Bring it in for a tune-up when the weather Paul shouted to her. She was already half way down the driveway and she didn't hear him. "They seldom said Paul, glumly, as he prepared to an- swer his call. If your car's engine is run- ning hot, or if your automatic transmission seems to be slug-, gish have your thermostat checked. Thermostats open and close to regulate coolant flowing through the cooling system to maintain proper engine t e m p era tures. Functioning correctly, thermostats should open to allow coolant to pass through the system when the coolant reaches the exact tem- perature level for which its en- ginge was designed. If the thermostat opens be- fore the coolant reaches this desirable temperature, the en. gine will run too cool. This will result in excess wear on mov- ing parts, accumulations of sludge in t h e crank case and decreased fuel economy, among other things. However, should the thermo- stat fail to open when the proper temperature is reached, the engine is subjected to over- heating. With the thermostat closed coolant flow is blocked off from the radiator. Until the stat opens, the coolant be- comes hotter and hotter. When this occurs, the engine will deteriorate rapidly as metal parts arc tortured by extreme temperatures. In addition to costly dam- age done to metal parts, overheating also results in loss of engine power, in- creased oil consumption, ab- normal combustion and pre- ignition. And. because transmission fluid is cooled in the radiator, transmission failure becomes a serious possiblity. A great per- centage of all automatic trans-, mission failures can be traced to engines running too hot! It's a good idea to have your car's cooling system tuned up before cold weather sets in. In addition to inspscting the operation of Hie thermostat, careful attention should be paid to radiator and hoses, hose clamps, fan bells, and safety pressure caps. Should they fail, any of these key cooling components caa lead to serious, and costly, en- gine troubles. got1 Colour.' Till p.m. Credit Card Purchasing Becomes Popular Than Ever The popularity of using oil e o m p a n y credit cards to charge for car maintenance is increasing, according to the Car Care Subcommittee of the American Petroleum Institute. Many factors indicate that today's motorist is aware of automotive safety, and is concerned about the _ safety and performance of his own ear. More than ever before he's purchasing tires, batteries, and maintenance services when needed, using his credit card instead of cash. Dr. Paul Nadler of New York University has estimated that there are today over 100 million oil company credit cards in use compared with 70 million out- standing just four years ago. Over stations now honor credit cards. In a national study of gas- oline credit card usage, just eompleted by Time Magazine, the following facts were re- Tealed: When asked, '-'What items have you used your credit card 51 per cent indicated tire purchases 39 per cent indicated battery purchases 36 per cent indicated tune- ups, and 45 per cent indicated repairs In the same study, 20 pel- cent of the credit card holders out of 5 said that they valued their particular credit card because "the station has good mechanics and facilities for repair." Nearly all oil companies now allow dealers to charge for in- stallation of products carried in their stations. Many of the companies permit charging of the service work as well as the needed replacement parts.
