Training and Enrichment Session ARE INVITED TO WORSHIP WITH US' _____ REV. ROB MCCARTHY parish and the showfolk are his parishioners. Msgr. Robert J. McCarthy is simply Father Mac to about carnival workers who call on him to hear confessions and perform marriages, baptisms .and other religious rites. A former midway barker, the 56-year-old Roman Catholic priest is the head of the Showmen's League of Prayer and chaplain for seven United States-based carnival associations. He is'based at St. James parish in Water- town, N.Y., and travels thousands of miles a year to look after the spiritual needs of the carnival workers. He worked as a carnival hand while attending college and, after his ordination in 1945, found that he missed the people and the sights, sounds and smells. So he asked to be assigned to the carnival cir- cuit. He said he has been doing his thing for 25 years, introducing himself to the car- nival people by delivering copies of the Showman's Prayer to rides, booths and trailers. Despite the fact that his parishioners are migrants, Father Mac said he does not consider the carnival circuit a difficult parish. "They're just like the peo- ple in any other parish." He said carnival people have been discriminated against since the Depression when midways attracted some undesirable types as workers. But today, carnival people are cautious about the people they hire; Carnival people who know Father Mac speak affec- tionately and enthusiastically about him. "Sure I know him." said a midway ride operator at the Central Canada Exhibition here. "He's a damn good friend." "I'm not a religious person but it's sure good to know he's around when you need said another. "Sometimes I just talk to know when you just need to talk." Father Mac also is an inter- carnival contact for many of the travelling workers. He brings news of friends and relatives to persons working in other carnivals.
